Socialization Issues Hey guys! Our Max is very sweet and loving toward us, but is still so timid around other people. He will agree to sniff their hands and occasionally allow some petting, but nothing beyond that. Will freak out if someone tries to hold him. We introduced him as soon as we could to our family members. About three weeks after we got him, we moved back home and have let him meet our family over and over again to try to get him comfortable. We have now been back almost two months, and he is still so timid with them. If our family offers him a treat, he will take it and run away with it. We would like for family to be able to dog-sit on occasion, but I don't see how this is possible if Max won't let anyone but us but a leash on him or walk him. |
You might try having 'new' people greet and then ignore him. Maybe he'll become more social if he has to work for attention! If he does approach someone, have that person give him a little pet and then ignore him again. He might feel a bit overwhelmed by a bit too much attention. I would not let anyone try to hold him for now. My groomer use to have remind Piper that she didn't have wings because Piper would wiggle so hard to get out of her arms---Now Pipe practically falls asleep when Carolyn takes her from me. Be patient, have others be a bit aloof, and give him time. Just a couple of thoughts...! |
Good idea... Max does love attention and hates to be ignored, even by people other than us. I was also afraid that we would have a small window to socialize him as a puppy, and that it would be too late at some point for him to like other people. Maybe if we are taking very small steps in the right direction he will continue to progress. |
Piper, too, hates being ignored! She came to me about at about 3 yrs old and was quite shy...I used to pick her up so people could say hello, because on her own, Piper wouldn't approach. Now I sometimes apologize because Piper can be a little "pushy" in walking over to people!!! I've always given her a lot of leeway, and still do, to handle social situations in her own way (with a few nudges and a lot of encouragement from me). Just make sure you get your little guy out and about whenever you can so he gets the whole people interaction thing!! |
You may want to take him to an obedience class to for socialization, access to a trainer, and for confidence. |
