Help really fast, please!
 

Chewie's eating a lot less, per doc instructions. She's been having these "shiver as if really cold" episodes and my husband tried to downplay it this morning. well, she did it again. She's supposed to be eating 1/16th of a cup of rice and turkey, boiled. It's not NEARLY enough, as she's always hungry afterwards. She did it AGAIN. I had enough. I put pumpkin, turkey, rice (allllll fat free like they asked) together, gave her a 1/4 cup, and then put karo syrup, (I hate that it says with real vanilla, but I can't stop that. can't find any normal ones) on her gums.

The shivering was sitting and she's SO tired because she hasn't napped much OR slept. I really hope I did the right thing, because this is ridiculous. what about my dog and her hunger? she hasn't vomited, so I believe the "inflamed intestine" nonsense along with the pancreatitis is just that- nonsense. I believe t he pancreatitis is real, but not the other stuff. If YOU were impacted, YOU'D have stomach aches, too.

Any way, please tell me I did the right thing, because 700 dollars later, I still haven't had all my questions answered. that shivering IS low blood sugar, yes?

If she has pancreatitis then she may shake as it's very painful & dogs often shake from pain. And yes it is VERY possible her intestines are inflamed.

I'm not a expert by any means but I think at times, going with your gut is better. I know you've already spent a lot of money but perhaps getting a 2nd opinion would give you better answers?

Also with pancreatitis you should be feeding several SMALL meals a day rather than a couple of large meals. And shaking is not always low blood sugar & most dogs with pancreatitis will shake from the pain. Sent you a PM.

She was in quite aq bit of pain; it's since eased thank heavens. She's not showing distress, but is very, very, hungry. I agree her intestines WERE inflamed, but unfortunately, the dx for that came on the tail end, so I don't think it's the issue any longer. Just what my gut says. I was told to give the those small meals every 6-8 hours. I will do so again, but I want her to get some nutrients in her and then ease it up to maybe 1/8 of a cup. I was given permission just a bit ago to do every 3-4 hours, so that's a huge relief. Her pain let up the second her bowels were relieved, and her whining is now gone. Her problem is now she's just so dang tired and hungry. she's curled up in bliss on my husband's chest, and the shivering stopped about 15 minutes after he meal and the karo syrup.

P.S. I did get a second opinion, lol. I'm not laughing because it's funny. I'm just so tired and thankful that my girl seems to be on the mend.

Yes 3 to 4 hrs is the norm. You can also give a bit of canned pure pumpkin if she gets constipated again. As long as you feed 3 to 4 hrs you don't need the Karo & the sugars can add insult to the pancreas.

I had pancreatitis at the end of last year. It is a VERY painful condition and very serious. I was in ICU for over three weeks. Even when I was still very sick I was complaining I was hungry. They would not give me food. I was on IVs. I was not even allowed water. My pancreas had to rest. If that is what the vet says, then follow what they say. I am surprised now after my ordeal that dogs are allowed home with pancreatitis. It is serious and can cause death. Even if she is hungry, it's not always the best to feed. I know it makes sense to think if she's hungry that she is feeling better, but I think the vets know best.

So sorry to hear your baby is still not well. It's so stressful on us to see a baby sick. Hope today is a better day for both you and your wee little one.

I think she is shaking from being in pain, not from hypogly...

I will also add (from experience) that relapses are very common with pancreatitis. Just when you think things are turning around and your dog is feeling better - boom! There goes that other shoe. It can take weeks for pancreatitis to resolve. A common mistake that many make is to ease up on the diet and feeding protocol too soon. Your dog may appear hungry but that does not mean her pancreas is ready to get back to normal duty. Our natural instinct is to feed them when they're hungry, but pancreatitis should be the exception to that rule. Small, very low fat meals every three to four hours as tolerated, and very gradually increase the amount of food per meal, or you are likely to find yourself back at square one, and a set back is harder to treat than the initial pancreatitis. Having patience is the key! Good luck, and prayers for Chewie to get back to normal quickly.

I did think of that straight off. Chewie has been huffing when her tummy is in pain, while howling and whining, and pacing. That's not present, nor is the pacing or howling.
It was literally flat out being freezing and excitement. She's losing teeth, and one of her molars is coming in whonky. Her way to show me that's painful is scratching at her jaw. I was completely at a loss last night, until my husband came home after the karo/food (and she stopped within 10 minutes, further adding to my confusion!) and she did it again. Classic excitement, but whole body shivers. Her paw pads and ears were freezing cold again. I wrapped her up in a quilt and put her on hubby's tummy for their nightly cuddles. she was perfectly fine after that.

This will NOT address pain issues...if this baby is having so much pain she is quivering and shaking, I would get this baby some immediate vet help....I could not/would not watch any of my babies shiver in pain from questionable issues....there are so many meds that can address these issues, there is no reason for this baby to be in such a distress! Get a vet that will do SOMETHING to help this pup!

Oooh no no no!! Don't get me wrong. I didn't give her a TON more. Just a bit more than usual. By usual, I don't mean her regular portions, I'm talking by the ER sheet.She had three different orders going on at that point. She had nothing by mouth for 12 hours (followed) but then was called and asked to give her pumpkin for her constipation. Then nothing again. THEN I was told to give her turkey and white rice. It was confusing and I was very stingy with her portions. I haven't let up one iota after that feeding last night. She got her usual portion this morning, but.. this time, I halved THAT and gave her a bit more two hours later.. and am planning on doing that at her "lunch" too. I think this seems to be a great combo. She's not whining for food, she's playful, active, and happy.. well... as active as she can be. she's on the mend, but not even at 70% yet I wouldn't think. It's not just her pancreas, either. She is almost over the intestine issue and constipation is done, too. but between the pancreas and her right side of mouth, she's not entirely comfortable.

Thanks for your advice, I'll continue to treat her with kid gloves per food. Last thing I want is for her to have issues again.

It was ordered. :). Two days ago. She's had vet visits. With her constipation at play, they don't want her on meds. I also have her starting the rx food on Thursday- per vet's orders. Wants her on the boiled turkey, pumpkin, and rice until then. She's been in and out of the vets since Friday night. I also believe if she has an issue in the future with hypo- and Wylie's mom is likely correct, given her reaction when Hubby got home, not hypo, before the nutra drops come in, IF it happens and if needed, it'll be honey. But gosh, no I don't think that's a sufficient source of nutrients. Not by any means. I gave her the diet they asked and rubbed SOME on her gums. She hasn't had an issue with this before, and after all that I read saturday (while she was pacing and screaming from pain, even on a pain med from the Vet ER doc) I learned about those drops. I've also cautioned my husband to not let her run, and have told my daughter to NOT get her worked up- explained that she doesn't have a lot of reserves right now. So, thank you, If I had seen this friday I'd have been Oh THANK YOU SO MUCH!! But, thank you for the added bolster, I kinda just guessed on that.

Please read up on the kind of HONEY you are using....there is SOME honey that should not be given.....something about how it is processed or stuff added or something...I do NOT give and have never given honey....some others on here that are knowledgeable about honey and the issues it can cause....something about the way it is processed or stuff added to it....again, I have never used honey for that reason....
