Information Overload It seems for every different site I visit there are a number of different opinions on how to train a puppy. Now there do seem to be some common themes. However even something as well accepted as crate training has multiple variations depending on who the source of the information is. I've seen this type of information overload in other hobbies and projects. Most of the time the worst case scenario is I waste my time and resources by ruining some inanimate object or by getting it wrong or having to do something over again. But with a puppy and dealing with a living creature, one that has automatically showed us unconditional affection I feel the stakes are higher to get it right the first time. Getting things wrong not only means wasted resources but excess stress on a living thing. This has led to an increase amount of stress in attempting to decide the best course of action. Also like some other hobbies and projects where you can see immediate and measurable results that is not always the case raising a puppy. We have only had our puppy a few days and we have noticed some improvements and from what we can tell so far very little backsliding. But I know we will not see the real fruit of our labors until the puppy is is closer to adulthood. I know this is kind of existential as I'm not really looking for practical advice. But I just wanted to share my worries with those who have gone through this before. |
I understand. A few years down the road, you will start dwelling on things you wish you had known and things you could have done differently. I am very happy with my boys, but there are things I could have done better. Good thing my first boy is smarter than I was. :D Best advice: keep things positive and fun! Positive training along with structure/consistency make for much happier pups. View potty training as a sport rather than a chore. |
Everyone goes through this no matter how many pups they have reared. Sit down and accept the fact that you will not get everything 100% correct. Wish you could but unlikely. Each dog is different and has diff needs. Sometimes we clue in early and sometimes later in the game. Provide love discipline training good exercise and good nutrition. Look at this pup as creating a relationship with you. Love laugh play each day. Each day a bit of training. Know what behaviours you will accept or not. |
I agree...everyone goes through this. The reason you're seeing so many different ways of doing things is *because* we are dealing w/ living, breathing creatures here, who are individuals right from their birth -- therefore, what works for one pup may not work for another - hence, there are lots of choices/avenues one could take. |
It's true there's a lot of info out there. I guess it's up to you to decipher which best suits for your needs. As others mentioned, as living beings everyone's different and every dog is different...so it's part of the process to figure out which method works for you and your pup :) Regardless though, as long as you do enough research, your efforts won't be wasted. It's more about having the patience to see it through. You'll see results eventually, as some learn faster than others! |
