Puppy Shots Decision?! HELP! My Nitro was born on February 7th. He is now 9.5 weeks old. The breeder gave him his first set of distemper and parvo and de-wormers. I brought him home last Thursday.... I took him to the vet to get a vet check and they said he's not ready for his next vaccines until at least April 19th.. (which is Tuesday!).... So I made an apt for Tuesday the 19th... I have now heard better things about a different vet so I called to try to get him in over there. They're first appointment they have available is for Friday May 6th. (which is 17 days after the first visit I could go to.) As of May 6th Nitro would be 12.5 almost 13 weeks old. So my question is.... should I take him to the first vet on the 19th or could I wait until the other vet on the 6th?.... I don't know if waiting is a terrible thing? He had his first set of parvo and distemper before I picked him up from the breeder. So is waiting that long in between vaccinations going to harm him? Please give me opinions... I don't want to harm him if I wait... I'd just like to make sure. Also, is 12.5 weeks too long to wait for his second round? is he getting too much older than when he should get them? Please let me know if its safe to wait.... if not I will take him to the first vet's appointment on Tuesday. Thanks! :) -Nitro's mommy! |
Is the old vet so bad that you don't even trust him to give a shot? If so wait until you can see the new vet but make sure your puppy stays isolated from other dogs and don't let him outside until he has had all of his shots. If you trust the old vet to at least give Nitro his shots, go for it and start using the new vet afterwards. |
The first vet isn't bad.... I just have a lot of friends and family that go to the other vet and they say he is wonderful and they all love him. He has a lot more of a loyal clientele.... Also about $20.00 cheaper for vet visit fees. Which is why I'd like to see him.... I'd rather pay 45.00 than almost 69.00. Also, I didn't know if I should mix vets or just start him with one and stay with one.... (like go to this one for first shots and then the other after that.... shouldn't the other just see him from the very beginning? Idk... this is why I ask! hah |

12.5 weeks is fine, according to the vaccine schedule -- but still, you should call the 2nd vet and confirm that it will fit whatever they may require as THEIR schedule...as all vets could be different and may not follow current AAHA schedules. For vaccine info and a couple samples of vax schedules, go here: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...-overview.html |
I told her on the phone what his birthday was and she counted the weeks and I heard her say... "ok 10, 11, 12.... May 6th?" So I'm assuming she knows he's 12 weeks, but I can call again to make sure it fits with them. I just want him to be healthy. |
Wylie's mom..... Soo according to this post you posted before he could get his second round of distemper + parvo and also rabies if he's 12.5.... Another Vaccine Schedule via WSAVA / VGG 8-9 weeks old - Distemper + Parvo 11-12 weeks old - same as above 14-16 weeks old - same as above 12 weeks or older - rabies |

Whatever you do, please don't give the two shots at the same time. Definitely not good for the little guys. |

Ok! I will deff do the rabies separate... So here is what the breeder has on her vaccination records. I figured I'd post it so it could help. Born: February 7th, 2016 Pyrandel Wormer (3-7-16) (3-15-16) (3-21-16) (3-28-16) (4-4-16) Puppy Shot- Nobivac1-DAPPV (3-28-16) Neopar Shot (3-4-16) Sold and brought home 4-7-16... SOOOO..... Since that is when he got all his first round of shots.... is it still ok to wait until he is 12 weeks old? Because that will be pretty far in between. I just wanted to use these dates and double check. Could any breeders and parents give me any opinions please? I will deff do Rabies separate.... I just want to know if I can do the other round 2 of Distemper & Parvo..... Also, would you start him on lyme yet or no? |

According to the article, the shot series is started at 12 weeks of age, followed by another 2 to 4 weeks later, and then annually after that. If you decide to go with the Lyme Disease vaccination, space it out separate from the other vaccinations. As far as your other core vaccinations go, it looks like the first shots were given at a little over 7 weeks of age. That *may* have been too early to be effective since it should have been give at 8 to 9 weeks of age. Others on Yorkietalk will let you know if that is the case. I don't think there is any harm in waiting until you have an appointment to see your new vet to give the next core vaccines in the series. Just keep your puppy indoors, and if you go outside, keep it brief and away from where other animals may have urinated. We potty trained our Bella indoors, so that was not a problem for us. |
