Do Spayed Females Develop Male Behaviors? I have never heard of this before, but on another dog forum I was told to wait to have a "new addition" (in this case, a female) spayed until she learns the ropes of our daily routine. I was told that after spaying, a female can take up "marking" due to the hormone changes and make it especially difficult if they are not house trained (or should I say getting use to the daily routine of the other dogs in the house). How long should you wait? Or should I ask, have any of you experienced this before? |
I've never heard of such a thing. If the female is old enough for spaying (around 8 months) I would do it asap. Yes females mark, but if you empty their tank before they can mark, there will be no scent. Take them out frequently for walks or at least breaks on schedule. Get them used to the routine as early as you can. Uni is spayed and has marked indoors two times that I can think of, both times was before she had "siblings". Once when I first gave her a Wishbone chew (guess she loved it so much she didn't want anyone else to have it), and another time when we went over to a friend's house and she marked on the other yorkie girl's bed! No clue why, but she did. |
I had two females spayed at 6 months old, before their first heat cycle. They never marked. |
Unfortunately, she is not that young. She is a retired breeder who had her last litter a couple months ago. She is also retired from the show ring. She is around 6 yrs old. I adopted her under contract terms of getting her spayed but I do not have to do it right away. My male has been a real gentleman, for the only thing he has marked is his bed and I also caught the female jumping in his bed and doing the same. I now have to crate the female (while I am not home) in the kitchen while my male still has free-run of the kitchen. I tried this a couple times and it has worked so far. I also went out for about a half hour to the store and I picked up his pet bed and removed the crate and allowed both of them free-range of the kitchen. That worked as well but do not like the idea of either one of them having to lay on a hard linoleum floor. The female is going to take some work so she gets use to the routine. |
Piper was about 3 yrs old when I got her; I had her spayed immediately and never had any problems with male-like behavior. Now, admittedly, she is very much a little tomboy with many of her antics. Often, after doing her business, she'll do that ripping up the earth-thaang, while ga-ruffing, and ending with her doing a couple impressive bounces before dashing off...! |
4 females, 2 not spayed, 2 spayed, ALL were tome boys lol. One spayed girl use to do the back legs kick up the earth after she did her business, I had to make sure her sisters were never behind her lol. How I miss those girls. |
