Humping
 

Beowulf started humping his toy lastnight:eek: I've never seen him behave that way he is going to be 11 months on the 14th. Is this normal behavior? He's still my lil baby:(. I told him no and took his big toy away should I not have done that?

Perfectly normal. :) Was it a new toy? Max humped only one toy when he was a pup. It was a fuzzy lamb that I put away. No more humping.

I believe correcting a dog is fine if you want to discourage the behavior. Do it gently, maybe just redirect attention and remove the triggers for humping.

No it's an old toy but it's one of the biggest one he has, he's got another one that size but it's not soft like that one. So you never let him play with the lamb toy again?

I put the lamb toy away permanently after testing it a couple times. Not sure why the lamb brought out the humping. :D

Teddy humps Max a little when he is super excited and feeling his Cheerios. We just laugh at Teddy. Doesn't last long and it isn't very often.

Ah okay I'm going to keep it away from him for a few days and give it back and see what happens. Lol he's like WooHoo Max we got some cheerios:animal36 Lol

LOL! Not real Cheerios. That is our little joke, our version of "feeling oats" or energy. We always say Cheerios or Wheaties. Being wily. :D

I skimmed through your comment the first time and thought the same thing. My initial reaction: Cheerios has something else to advertise! After re-reading, I got it.

Yep, totally normal - it's just the instinct we all have as animals. I mean, I hump stuffed animals ALL THE TIME, it's ridic. Okay, no...just kidding :D.

But seriously, 3 out of my 4 dogs hump. Wylie and Marcel have a stuffed "lover dog" they have dates with. Our girl, Pfeiffer, humps her round bed - it's so freakin' cute.

I don't believe in discouraging this behavior since it's instinctual and since it seems to be a need of theirs. It would be different if they were trying to hump humans, that I would stop and redirect. But I'm totally fine w/ them having their love sessions with their lover dogs and beds :).

Cody who was 4.5 yo at Christmas time, neutered, has never humped anything in the 2 years we are together. So Santa gives him a BIG teddy bear cos Cody LOVES to FLING things in the air. Christmas day he grabs that teddy Bear and starts humping away :eek:, I give him my ungodly sound for NOOOOOOO and he stops, looks at me then the bear and walks away. I think about what should I do, leave it out or take away, it's so cute and BIG I decide to leave it out and play it by ear. It sits alongside his toy box, every time he went near it he refused to even look at it, then one day he grabs it trying to kill it but Teddy ends up under Cody's legs and the humping begins, again I give out the NOOOOO sound followed with NO HUMPIMG. Well Teddy sat for months by the toy box, Monday he grabs it starts fighting with it, flinging it all over, I am telling him GOOD BOY kill Teddy, praising him like crazy for playing with it, he stops looks at me starts to hump looks at me just as I am about to give out my ungodly sound and he STOPS the humping and continues with the kill. He knows he's not supposed to hump it, he is learning playing is ok, humping is not even if Teddy ends up under his back legs in the right position lol.

:yelrotflm you're too funny! My boy is not neutered so I'm just trying to delay this behavior for as long as I can. He does try to hump my boyfriend sometimes but last night is the first time he humped his toy and I don't want his yorkie juice all over his toy especially cause we play fetch with him all the time lol

Bella had a favorite toy that she would hump before she was spayed. Bailey hasn't shown any humping tendancies yet.... And during play, they will both try to get the back of the other. We don't allow either of them to hump the other because it is a sign of domination.

lol my Hudson was humping this big stuffed monkey this morning, it kind of took me by surprise lol. I didn't stop it but two youngest sons didn't know what he was doing. I said he is trying to mate with the monkey. They thought it was hysterical of course. As long as he doesn't try to hump Ella (I don't think she would allow it for a hot second lol).

Scottie started humping his biggest Dino toy (it's like the size of a small puppy) around the same age as Beowulf! Seems normal to me. I personally didn't want his humping to become a regular thing, so I told him "NO" but didn't take it away. He did it a few times afterwards but eventually he stopped. Dino is now his favourite toy that he brings to me. :)

My Kookie is only 8 weeks old and started humping her big stuffed toy animals. I read somewhere that it means dominance and Alfa instinks. What should I do? She is sooo young...

We have a 3 month old little boy and as soon as we brought him home he is humping our 10 month old yorkie girl, and also noticed him doing it to the toys...I have been telling him no and it seem I am telling him no all day, any suggestions on this problem..

I think Lilah does this more when she hasn't been excercised. She does have her favorite toys but based on behavior patterns I would say she dos this when she is under excercised. Maybe try to make sure pups are going on walks and getting enough stimulating playtime? It doesn't seem to be in Lilahs interest when she has already had plenty of activity to mount a toy.

I have nothing to add but I am LMAO. I'm sorry, this doesn't help you. The more I read, the more I'm cracking up. Teddy looking at you and then stopping. Tears. running. down. face.

My girl pup mounted her bed twice since I brought her home. I noticed that both times were right after she came in the house from lying around in the grass outside. I wiped her tummy and bottom area with a puppy wipe and she stopped humping. I think she was just itchy from the grass.

Some dogs are just humpers. My dog is fixed and he is 2 and he will hump everyday if I let him. He gets my pillows and blankets. I have to pick them up every night and put them away. It drives me crazy!!

My new girl Ezzy would hump my tolerant boy Zippy often while we were out hunting mushrooms in the woods last May/June. Here at home, not as often. She's 5 lbs, he's 15 lbs. I just scratch my head and ignore it after I laugh.
