Helpful Tips? So I have been trying to brush Daisy out because she does get matted under her legs. I obviously don't want her to get to matted. But when I go to brush her she bites and bites the brush. Like she will not let the brush near her. Any tips on how to break this bad habit. The groomer does do it for cheap but I would like to do it myself. I have tried distracting her and tried given her treats while brushing her too. |
Legs and armpit areas (including between back legs) tend to be more sensitive. I have to be really careful with Max when I comb those areas or he jumps. Make sure you are holding the hair when you brush or comb to prevent tugging of the skin when the tool catches a tangle. I start at the paw and work my way up the outside of the leg, holding the hair in one hand while brushing/combing with the other. I use a comb in the armpit area last. To keep tangles to a minimum on my boys, these steps helped: Good conditioner in the bath with a little extra for chest and legs (some of the tiny tangles work out naturally with conditioner) Thorough combing after bath and dry (brush first, but then fine tooth comb to find all the tiny tangles) Daily checks with comb especially in those problem areas Frequent bathing -- clean hair is less likely to tangle than dirty hair. When I put off bath day, the tangles are more difficult. If Daisy continues to resist brushing or tries to bite the brush, use a little massage to relax her and make the process more enjoyable. Also, try to reserve grooming time for when she isn't at her peak energy levels. |
I agree w/ Kristin that the legs and armpits can really be sensitive for them, in general. I'm always more careful in those areas...so it may help a bit to be extra careful and hold the hair away from the body while getting out the distal tangles first, then work your way inward. And all you can really do is continue to push her head aside every time she tries to interfere. |
Thank you guys soon much!!!!! She seems to be getting used to it. I try now to brush her only when she starts getting tired. She still goes for the brush but not as much anymore :) |
I find that if there is an area that needs work on her legs, she prefers that I use the comb rather then the brush. |
