question for my 5 year old yorkie I inherited my Yorkie 4 xmas's ago by my daughter and her family, who got my "Rhody" from a rescue pound. He's never had any health issues. But I did have a recent concern. Starting this past week, I have noticed him urinating more often than usual, plus drinking alot of water more than usual. Now he is always good about using the puppy pads inside the house, and I'm always taking him outside, which he loves to do. But this past week, I've notice a few puddles in a few spots inside the house, which he had never done this before. Just curious if this sounds like something, someone knows about; I called and made a appointment with my vet for this coming week, but was just curious if anyone had any ideas to throw at me before out visit. Thanks |
I would have him checked out by the vet. It could be just an UTI or something more serious. I believe I read that Cushing's Disease has symptoms of urinating more and drinking more water. Good Luck! |
Yes, have him checked out. UTI or bladder infection, Cushings Disease, kidney failure all have those symptoms. Its probably nothing but better to find out for sure. Diana |
It would be good if you can take a urine specimen with young the vet. I usually do it by putting down a new potty pad, but put it plastic side up. When he urinates you can pour it into a clean cup or zip lock bag or suck it up with a clean empty syringe and take it with you. Don't put it in the frig. |
Thanks for all your suggestions..... I have a early appointment on Monday with our vet. And I will surely bring a sample of his urine with me. I appreciate all your imput.... |
I would do basic labs to check kidney functions and urine to see if there is infection of other abnormalities. The breed can be very prone to bladder stones, so your vet will likely try to feel the bladder to see if any are detected. He may need an X-ray or ultrasound to check. |
Please let us know what the vet says tomorrow. We are all hoping that all is well! |
update I took Rhody in to the Vet this morning, and she told me it could be a number of different things, or maybe nothing, She gave him a rectal exam and took blood work, and I won't know anything until I hear back from her. Maybe tomorrow..... She also mentioned a small heart murmur. So we will see when she calls me back. I will keep updating. |

I had brought in a urine sample as suggested by "yorkiemini" and the vet thanked me several times for doing this |

Starting with labs and urine is always a good first step. Keep us posted. |
Well, I received a voice mail from my vet this morning, regarding the results of Rhody's blood work yesterday. It seems that Rhody has developed Diabetes. I have tried to call her back, and I left a message, but I haven't been able to talk to her yet. But I wanted to update everyone on the results. Thanks. |
Reccles, I am glad you have an answer now. At least diabetes is treatable. Keep us posted on how he does. I'm sure you'll be hearing from others that have dogs with diabetes. I only have a diabetic son so not much help but I am sending tons of prayers that he stabilizes quickly! Diana |
Thank you!!! |
Glad you have an answer. Will keep your little guy in my prayers. |
