New yorkie owner.... Help & hello!!! Hello, I am a brand new Yorkie owner! I get to pick up my little baby boy on Thursday afternoon. His name is NITRO and he is 1LB 8OZ. He was born on February 7th, 2016. I am so excited to bring him home I could cry! Ha. I can't wait to be a yorkie mommy!! I am taking him to the vet on Friday afternoon for his first check up. The breeder gave him his first dose of PARVO shot, but I believe that's it. When I called the vet she said he should get distemper and influenza... does anyone know what all shots he should get other than parvo and how much they cost (estimation)? I AM SO NERVOUS THOUGH!!! I've always had big outside dogs, never a little inside dog. I'm not really sure what to expect. I am pretty sure I have everything I need for him to arrive. Does anyone have any help on what to expect, either with bringing him home the first week, taking him to his first vet check up, or any stories or warnings? haha! Please help this new mommy! Thank you all for you help in advanced and I am glad I can be apart of this yorkie forum with you all. Take Care! DragRacer1934. |
Congrats! Read all the links in this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ent-guide.html If parvo was given, then distemper was too as it's a combo shot - and it includes influenza. |
Ohh! Ok thank you very much! I will deff read that! :) hehe I won't be able to sleep tonight I'm too excited! |
Gosh, I'm so excited for you! And happy that you're here to do your research! This site offers so much good info/advice. Not to mention moral/emotional support. In addition to Wylie's recommended link, please check out the stickies in the "Sick and Injured" forum. When/if puppies get sick, things can go down hill REALLY fast. I firmly believe that it's better to be prepared and not have to put it to use. I look forward to seeing your furry's pictures! |
Thank you very much. Yes! I am so glad I found this YT forum. I am really relieved that everyone is knowledgeable and helpful and supportive. Makes me feel a lot better about being a new mommy! I will check that out! Thank you. I will probably post pics as soon as I get him home tomorrow! I am super excited!! Thank you! |
May I just add something completely trivial. Yorkies are addictive! I got my first pet at 47, my sweet baby, Zeus, and now we just got our second, Perseus. I would have a house full if it were possible, but I digress. I'll settle for two sweet boys! Good luck to you, and I hope one is enough!:) |
That is totally understandable. There is another litter of younger pups from a different mother at the breeders and my mom said she wants to get one of those so we can have two! haha! So I totally agree. |
Congrats! Excited for you! Watch him like a hawk... They find everything!!! Like little bottom feeders and can end up really ill! Free food and water as a puppy and warmth very important..... I am sure he will be one loved little fur baby and the love they give..... Tenfold ❤️ |
With such a little pup, have an xpen ready! I had no idea what I was getting into when I brought my first boy home. :D The Puppy Parent Guide that Wylie's Mom posted is essential reading. Congratulations! Enjoy your new baby. |
Congrats ! |
haha! Yes! I will watch him like a hawk. I swept and vaccumed the floors so much this week waiting for his arrival today! haha. Also, I am reading the guide that she posted... Another question.... When do you start giving them flea and tick? Right away at 8 wks when you bring them home? Also, Do I put him on a schedule for food yet or only once hes older? Not sure if I should schedule meal times or let him free feed. If I let him free feed how old should he be when I start making a schedule? Thanks!! |
Flea/tick, I waited till my two were fully vaccinated and were going out on regular walks. Not all but some do have allergic reactions to these. I think most recommend free feeding at such a young age. Especially if he's tiny. There's always the danger of hypoglycemia. If you haven't already, I highly recommend you get some Nutri-Cal just in case. Make sure you read up on the signs of hypoglycemia also so if he shows signs, you can act quickly. |
I would not use any flea and tick preventatives on a puppy that small at 8 weeks. Ideally he should not go outside until he has all of his puppy shots, excluding rabies. Wait on rabies until about 5 - 6 months. Hopefully some of the people with small Yorkies will tell you what they use for flea and tick preventatives -- for using when your pup is ready. If you were to use Frontline for instance, the smallest "dose" can be split. I have put half the vial on each of my 9 pound boys. Feeding: Free feed a puppy that small. Have food available at all times and let him eat when he wants. Hypoglycemia is of big concern for puppies, especially really small ones. The stress and excitement of going to a new home increases the risk. |
Got It! Thank you all so much! One more question.... I am looking up different types of insurance plans and policies. I am torn between PetPlan and Healthy Paws... any suggestions? |
Congrats on your baby. Hope you have puppy (baby) proofed your home, meaning get all TV, Stereo, lamp wires off the floor, out of reach of the new baby, they are like magnets to a new curious yorkie baby. Life as you have known it is over lol, let the fun begin. |

HAHA! Yes! I have puppy (baby) proofed the house for the last two weeks. All the cords are off the floor and swept and vaccumed. I have all his toys and everything laid out for him and ready to go! I am super excited but also super nervous! I am picking him up today at 4PM! And yes.... life as I've known it.... is over and today my life changes forever! For the better! :) |

Make sure you bring a carrier if you're driving to pick up your puppy by yourself. |
Thanks!!! My whole family is going so I am going to hold him on the way home. Taking a towel to wrap his bum in in case of a little man accident. haha. Super excited! |

Have the person that you are buying your puppy from to provide you with a vaccination record that has the actual sticker labels from the bottle of the vaccine attached....this verifies what they are telling you is the truth....anyone can tell you they have given the puppy its shots....your vet should demand proof of that or he will want to re-vaccinate that baby....your breeder, if any good at all, knows this and will provide you with the shot record with the actual labels from the bottle attached to the record. To be effective, your baby should have not gotten any vaccinations except the NeoPar, until 8 weeks of age. People that sell puppies before they are 8 weeks old, frequently just lie and say they have gotten their shots....vets will hurry up and want to vaccinate ANY age pup, just to get the $$ for the vaccinations....but these vaccinations shold not be started until that baby is minimum 8 weeks old, then every 3-4 weeks depending on what company you are using, for a total of 3-4 doses, again depending on what company you are using. I NEVER give Lepto shot....make the vet separate it out from the dosage....I changed vets over this because he used a 7 way vaccination and Lepto was in the series and he would not leave it out....Lepto is real tough on Yorkies and if it is not prevalent disease in your area, most vets usually do not even recommend it...if they do give it, give Benadryl 15-30 minutes prior to the Lepto shot, and then stick around in the waiting room following the shot for another 20-30 minutes to see if they are going to have a bad reaction to it. (I must say I sold a baby to a lady, her vet said that was all crazy, he gave the pup its shot, she paid her bill, walked out to the car, got out of the driveway of the vet office, at which time her baby had an anaphylactic reaction, and before she could get turned around and back into the vet, the baby was too near gone...they were not able to revive the baby.....perhaps the next time she buys a baby from a breeder of merit, she will listen to her breeder, because we certainly would NEVER advocate doing or omitting anything that was in the best interest of our precious little babies. THIS event changed the way I do business....I used to let them go at 11 weeks of age, after the first 2 shots....I do NOT let my babies leave here until they are 15-16 weeks old, until they are completely vaccinated, all the vet has to give is a rabies shot.) |

Just a heads up... Assuming your very young puppy hasn't travelled much, be prepared to know that he might get motion sickness and vomit (some do, some don't). Very excited for you!! |
Any updates on the new pup? Pictures would be great!! |
Wow Yorkie mom! Thank you very much for that long rant!! My baby is healthy & got vet checked & has nothing wrong with him! Thank you :) I will not give lepto. I'm glad your such a reputable breeder! Ha! Do you have any references of people you have sold to please?! |
Canana! Thank you! I heard about that and was prepared. He does VERY well in the car. Just curls up and goes to sleep! :) No accidents! :) |
Russpilot!! He is doing wonderfully!!!!! :) I couldn't have asked for a better behaved puppy! He already stays in the house with very little potty accidents and he's only been there since Thursday! :) I am very pleased. Although he is an early riser (6:00) and I have never really been a morning person, I am very pleased that he sleeps through the night from 11-6! :) I will post pics in the pic forum!! Under Nitro! |

The potty accidents will come and go for a while but it sounds like you got one that "gets it" pretty early. Also, Yorkiemom1 has been a breeder for a very long time and is one of the most knowledgeable people on the site. The wisdom that she has on these little animals is vast and she is quick to help with any problems. This is a great forum of people who love Yorkies and will try to help you with anything that comes up... and believe me, things WILL come up! LOL Welcome to YT and I will go and check out the pictures of Nitro!:) |
HAHA yeah! He follows me everywhere :) lol... while cute, can also be very frustrating haha! also, yes I am very thankful that this forum exists and for the very knowledgeable people on the site. I just hope no one continues to act like its "their way or the highway" as I am trying to get opinions on things from a variety of people because not one person is all together correct. And when I said that the vet said he needed his other two shots I did not mean right away.... maybe that was my fault in the way I wrote my post, but I have him scheduled to get them in another week and a half so he will be older. The state of PA says you can release the pups from their mother and sell them at 8 weeks. While I understand that it may not always be the best option.... ALOT of people around here buy their puppies at 8 weeks from various breeders around. I understand she is knowledgeable and knows a lot..... but 8 weeks, or 15 weeks.... as long as he is happy and healthy that is ALL that matters! I do NOT want ANY problems on this site. I am just trying to get information! Thanks! :) |
You will very rarely get that "my way" vibe here. And the amount of info both already here on the forum, and that you can get from the members will be a life-saver. In some cases, literally. Welcome to the fun of these little creatures! Also my dad was an engine builder and drag racer for quite a while. What do you run? And what are you going to name your next Yorkie? (Cause like potato chips, its hard to just have one.) |
Yes. I do value a lot of this information VERY much! Its very important for a first time yorkie owner like myself.... they are VERY different than the black labs I've had before. hah! & thanks! It is very fun. I love it! (most of the time) haha. OH VERY NICE!!! (side note... my boyfriend is also an engine builder and is building my next engine. I have a Front Engine Dragster and Nostalgia Funny Car... my dad is a chassis builder) It is funny how forums with one topic can bring you together to bond on another topic as well. :) YES IT IS! hahah. We are actually looking into getting another yorkie from the same breeder. she has some that aren't quite ready to go yet. in a couple weeks. Looking into the name Bohdi (Bo-Dee) lol. If you have a personal email I could send you more pictures of Nitro and also the Drag Cars... :) You could message me on here if you'd like. |
