Sick boy My 16 y/o boy is not feeling well. He threw up about 3 times last night and I took him to the vet this morning bc he wasn't eating. He is so spunky and full of life... No one can believe that he is 16. He has perfect vision and is always playing and ready for a walk. In reality I know that something could develop at this stage in life and it's not like him not to even take a little chicken or cottage cheese. The vet is testing all the organ functions etc and lymes... Also he has been wobbly on his front legs a little. When he sits they kind of give out on him. There is no pain though and he gave his legs a good work over to check. I'm so worried... I hope it's nothing serious. He also gave an antibiotic to start in the mean time. It's more concerning at this stage in life bc I know my time with him is so precious bc it's limited. |

I know this is hard for you your little one not feeling good. I hope hes better soon doing his usual activities with you. I think that I would give him water also. Did the vet give you info on what to feed your baby. With him on antibiotics He might need something in his tummy. My babies would throw up taking antibiotics and a empty stomach. I have given my babies Beech nut baby food chicken in broth. When my little ones go through bad days that's the only thing they seem to want. We just went through that this past week with our youngest. We added rice to hers it helped her feel better. I know your baby is older but we have a fourteen yr old too and we do the same for him on his bad days. You might get him to eat just the chicken and leave off the rice. It's very mild for them. I'm not sure of the specifics with your baby. Our little old boy doesn't want to eat some days and he also get very picky. So we had to come up with ways to encourage him. He loves his cottage cheese too.:) |

Thanks for all the well wishes. I made a purée of chicken breast, rice, a little fresh pet and some cooked carrots. I blended it with some low sodium chicken broth and water and I've been feeding him a little every 15 minutes and so far he's kept it down. He even licked it by himself off of a plate! So we are doing better so far. He's had another dose of his antibiotic as well and he is drinking again on his own. The vet will call this afternoon with the results. |
Just seeing your post. I am glad to know you got Roger to eat as it will keep his strength up and also because he is on antibiotics. Happy to hear he is drinking on his own. Prayers he keeps doing great and the vet has good results from his tests. |
Glad to hear your little one is eating and drinking again. I just wanted to say that with my previous 19 year old pup, I found the syringe useful to feed water at times. Also, I found it useful to feed medication too - with tablets, I'd crush it and mix with water and squirt into her mouth (she was too smart and always spat the pill out, regardless of whatever medium I tried to hide it in :p ). Hope he gets better really soon and back to his normal self! |
So glad:) to hear your little man has begun to eat. Also he's drinking water on his own this to is good. Our little man has been fragile since birth. He was born crippled and had many other issues. But with a close watchful eye thank the Lord he helped us to learn how to care for our sweet 3 pd little gift. He was given to us because of his issues 14 yrs ago and has out lived our other precious babies. Sounds like your baby has a wonderful Mommy nurse.:)pray he continues to strengthen and gives mommy lots of thank you kisses. |
Got the results back from the full panel bloodwork and it's showing his liver levels are quite elevated. The good news is that he is eating and drinking well on his own again... So he is feeling better. The antibiotic that was given was in case of a tick illness which the vet says will still be effective in treating whatever is bothering the liver. He also has to take 2 other meds and then we go back in 2 weeks to retest. He thinks it's caused by rodent feces. Some kind of bacteria on the rodent feces that my boy may have walked in and then licked his paws at some point. It's totally treatable though and we are so thrilled. So now maybe we don't go for our walks anymore??? Between the terrifying tick illnesses and now random fecal diseases... He should maybe live out the rest of his life in a bubble. |

At 16 and aging, adjustments in his lifestyle will have to be made in order to accommodate his limitations as he ages....do you have a yard he can play in? He will get all the exercise he needs in your own yard, and wont be exposed to rat feces that have made him sick. "Age Accommodations" are made for them as well as us when we age....doesnt mean we cant still enjoy life....just means we have brought the boundaries in a little closer, a little tighter....cant walk as far, cant jump as high, cant tolerate the heat/cold as much....but mine love laying in the sun warming themselves.....watching the birds flying all over the back yard....those birds had better NOT land within stretching distance to one of my little seniors! Just part of the loving charm of having one of these precious seniors... |
