Aggressive female I recently got a female Yorkie around age 5 and she is si sweet with me and the cats. But she hates other dogs. When I take her for walks she is ok until a dog gets close to me. Anyone have any tips to help fix her attitude outside? |
Congratulations on the new addition to your family. How close are the other dogs getting to you? What kind of behavior does your girl display? Is she guarding you from dogs you greet? Or does she react to dogs who are just passing at a little bit of a distance? Desensitization through gradual proximity to other dogs is a good start. You can do that at a park or any place where dogs frequent, if you have one. Training classes are another good place. Basic training inside your home helps for training outdoors too. Commands like sit and "watch me." Then when you are outdoors and see an approaching dog, you would have her sit and watch you with her back to the passing dog. Takes lots of practice and patience. I understand the challenge and frustration. Max reacts to other dogs on our walk. He gets really excited and it comes across as aggression, the barking and pulling. |
Don't know where she spent those 5 years before she got you, but it sounds like fear. She may think she has to protect you either for yourself or for her. A very basic obedience class would help this greatly. Help, her learn you are in charge of the protection and her and give her the comfidence that she may need. Clearly, she loves you and is a sweety! She may have had a bad experience with other dogs. |
Congratulations on your new little girl. I'm sure that folks here will offer excellent suggestions and I'm sure that time together will help you figure out a lot about her...It's wonderful that she's good with your cats! Do you have a picture of her---ohhh and what is her name?! |
