Hawks, and other critters possible protection :eek: I noticed today that in my area the Hawks are getting ready to nest so they will soon have young to feed. Someone showed me a Kevlar vest that is used for coyotes and right away I thought HAWKS - we don't have coyotes around here. Us when hiking on the trails I often think of them. These are a real and clear and present danger....I have lost a small dog to a bird of prey (owl or hawk, I couldnt tell as I watched in absolute transfixed horror as that huge ugly bird grabbed my poor little dog that was playing with me in the back yard in the middle of the neighborhood, not out in a ranch country area, and flew off with her screaming, clutched in those talons.....that happened way back in 1975...maybe 73...?...but I will NEVER get that sight out of my mind, and it is as terrifying to me now as it was then. I would never allow my little dogs to run around alone, even in my fenced in back yard, any more than I would put a 14 month old baby on a highway esplanade to play unsupervised. |
yes, never leave them unsupervised and keep them close on a leash. don't put bird feeders out either, i did that 1 year, it attracted a smaller type of hawk, he tried for days and even took a big bluejay feeding at the feeder. If an animal is to the point of starving they will try to take anything to survive. including pets. yorkiemom1 , i'm so sorry that happened to you, that must have been traumatizing.i hope your little baby is resting in peace. |
@yorkiemom1, omg that must have been terrifying...i'm sorry you had to experience that in the past... i see hawks and other big birds flying around where i live and i wonder if they would grab my tiny babies and fly away... i let them hangout in patio during the day (i live in apartment...) and ofc i'm out with them.. but i'm still scared of thoughts of *what if* situations... maybe i should stop letting them in the patio... leash free even if i'm there with them now.. |

I have a small backyard and we are surrounded by other homes. My neighbor asked why I didn't just let Piper stay outside and play by herself--I 'should let her have some fun'. I responded that as safe as it seems, it only takes a second for something bad to happen---whether it be over the fence or down from the sky. Piper is about 9lbs, but two pounds or ten pounds, these are little, little babies who trust us to keep them safe--And though, of course, that is not always possible, we need to do our best. Yorkiemom, you are one of thee strongest, most loving people ever...That you were able to recover from such a tragedy speaks volumes in your strength and beliefs. It is wonderful that you continue, provide for, and share your love with your little ones and the rest of us. Big, grateful hug! |
I am so lucky to have a larger dog who I know would pull a hawk from the sky if it took her sister or brother. I still never leave them alone though, I am always there. Both the tinies weigh 5 and 6 lbs so they are truly itty bitty little guys. I am terrified of hawks and owls. I lost a bunch of chickens to an owl and it was awful. |

Even after our hawk incident the Fish And Wildlife people said "oh a hawk won't go after this little dogs, even they are too big". WRONG, even for all their knowledge they don't get that a hungry hawk or a hawk with young will go after anything they think they might be able to get. Some Hawks will go after bigger things that they can carry just to eat them on the spot. So be careful about what others say about Hawks ! |
Kinda happy that Monty came to me with no knowledge of "come back" so I have had to keep him on a leash when I am out and about. I have had time to learn about these dangers that come with having a little dog. I have only had big ones so this is a brand new learning ... so much to know! YorkieMom1 I am so very sad for your story. How absolutely traumatizing just imagining it. |
