Mature Yorkie - Pee Pad Use I have 2 female Yorkies, one who is 11, the other is 7. They have both been trained to use the pee pad while in the house, but they also go outside when taken for walks. In the past couple of months, the 11 yr old pees on the floor close to the pad but not on it. The younger one always uses the pad. They both use the same pee pad. The pad is changed every morning and every night. Any suggestions as to how to get the oldest one to actually get 'on' the pad again? :confused: :eek: Thank you for your responses. CarolBurg |
I have NO idea if this will work for you....I was using 25 x 30 inch pee pads....same thing started happening here with my precious little senior.....she would have one of 4 feet on the pee pad, and she THOUGHT she was on the pad, but she was missing it.....I got a frame and went up to 30 x 36 inch pads....for whatever reason, she managed to adjust her "drop zone" so that she managed to pee/poop on the pad....dont know if it was the larger pad or the "frame" outlining it so she knew when she steppped over the frame she was totally on the pad...it has worked well for us here.... |
Thank you for that feedback. That sounds like a good idea at least to try. I'll need to research to look for those larger pads. I started using bath towels under the pad to enlarge the area thinking it might help get her back to the pee pad. Not worked yet. |
How about putting 2-3 pads together to make a larger area for her to see if the larger area does work for her. For the frame.. I screwed/nailed 4 strips of 1"W x 21"L (21 x 21 pads were what I was using) wood pieces together to make a "boarder" for the pads. If you search for "pee pad holder" on amazon, you can see many types that might work for your furry. Good luck! |

It's hit or miss with Duchess. Most of the time her aim is perfect but there are those times when she is half off. I've tried larger pads as well but it hasn't worked for me......not sure what to do to get her to go potty in the middle of the potty pad. Oh well........she gets an A+ for effort. |

I think the difference is putting the pad in a holder....it has a physical, obvious edge they have to step over....maybe that draws some kind of "line" in their little minds.....this is what I rationalize in my mind.....I dont know......maybe the holder is better/easier to make a boundry pup can realize, because he has to step up and over it....???!!!!:confused::confused: |
My dogs are also hit or miss. Lately they have been doing wonderful but there are times that they miss the pad completely. |
I have never tried a pad holder or frame, but it sounds like a great idea! I usually put two pads together so that they overlap. This often does the trick. I did notice the same tendency you described in a senior Yorkie I had. Her eyesight was not as good as it had been and I think that affected her hitting the pee pad. |
