I may have created a little monster! I posted a few weeks ago that I was having problems with Cooper's potty training. He is 8 months old and a joy to have, but today I think I may have figured out why he will occasionally go potty inside. I do stained glass - but have not really done much since we got Cooper 6 months ago. Today I resumed work on a big panel and my husband was working in the shop. I was taking him out as usual, but this morning I went into my glass "room" and there was some poop. Cooper I called and he knew he had done wrong. Just cleaned it up and went on. Then a couple of hours later right after we went outside, he went right into the same room and peed where he had pooped. Now I'm getting frustrated and trying to remember all of your wonderful advice of patience. About an hour ago both my hubby and I where in the glass room cutting a piece of came and he peed alot in two places right in front of us! Are yorkies spiteful? Is he mad because we are not talking, playing and sitting with him? At my wits end today and not sure how to fix this problem if that's what it is. Any advice? |
It seems like a plea for attention. At 8 months of age, you need to get the behavior under control, because the older they get, the harder they are to correct. Punishment doesn't work well at all. The best thing is to give a lot of effusive verbal praise and attention, and possible a healthy treat, every time he does the right thing. Has he been neutered yet? That might also help. |
yes he was neutered at 6 months and he knows he gets a treat when he goes potty. If I forget, he lets me know that he didn't get his treat yet. He also knows it's wrong too. He has that guilty look and body language. |
I believe I read a few weeks ago on here that they aren't fully potty trained until 10 months. My little gal isn't, and the potty pad and now outside combo is hit or miss. I read quite a bit on behavior before getting her, and they can be stubborn with the potty training. She can even hold it, as evidenced by her refusal to pee on me, or in the car. She'll even wait, and still, she goes all over the house, and 65% (or so) on the pad. It's not spite; she does it when Dan scolds her, she does it when HE'S peeing in the bathroom, she'll do it in excitement; this is all normal and nothing that patience and focus on training won't fix. |
This is what I do for Lola and Coco. I feed them and give them water. After that, I put them in their cage for 30-45min. This will ensure they don't pee or poop in the house. After the 30-45min, i'll walk until they're done with their stuff. I've tried so hard with the pad training and free feeding but it never worked for me. So now it's me feeding them on a regular schedule of 2-3x per day. For water, I would give it to them 3-4x per day. When you give him water, you'll have to walk him too after 30-45min. You have to make sure he pee before he enter the house. |
thanks for the advice.... patience patience I tell myself! |
