Dental surgery has anymore experienced dental surgery or thinking about it ? My concern is the anesthesia for a 10 y/o yorkie. He has bad teeth and if i dont do anything thats not good either ??? Any suggestions ??? |
I would absolutely do it if it's needed - I really would. |
I would too. My Brandi (RIP) was 7 yrs old when I got her as a rescue. Within 2 months of having her, she had to have all but 4 teeth pulled. When she was 11, she had to have her remaining 4 teeth pulled. Her teeth were horrendous and I can't imagine the pain she was in. Before they could even pull her teeth, she had an infection in her mouth that was treated with antibiotics. As long as she is in good health and you have the necessary bloodwork that shows she is okay to be anesthetized, I would do it. You don't know if she is in any pain. |
I was in the same situation 2 years ago with my then 13 year old boy. He was in need of a dental and I was so worried about losing him. We did all the necessary blood work to make sure everything was functioning properly and I also paid extra for an EKG before the procedure and paid more for a diff kind of anesthetic that is allegedly easier for them to wake up from (I can't think of the name). Anyway he did great! He lost 7 teeth and is a new dog! His spunk and energy are that of a puppy again! It's amazing at now 15 he acts more youthful that my 3 year old yorkie. Now I do regular brushings to maintain his teeth bc I don't think I would ever want him to go under again as he is getting so old. I think at 10 your boy will do well. Just do the necessary testing to make sure everything is healthy beforehand. |
I absolutely agree. I took in an older toy poodle rescue that had horrible teeth. I don't think he'd ever seen a toothbrush. All of his teeth were infected and the smell was terrible. He had two dental surgeries within several months after we rescued him, and lost all but three of his teeth. I think he was 9 or 10 when he had the second surgery. But he is like a different dog now he isn't in pain. He's gained some weight and is a much happier little guy. Diana |
Yes, have it done. Roxy had to have some teeth pulled when she was 7. She did very well. Was home by the afternoon. Needed soft food, and still does best with it. If you wait, the teeth will only get worse & increase the chances of loosing more teeth. Good luck!!! :) |
As long as your vet is using up to date anesthetic protocols all should go well. BUT, be sure to have his blood work checked before hand to rule out any medical issues that could complicate things. Honestly, the risk of a pup dying from renal or cardiac issues due to periodontal disease is much higher than the risk of dying from anesthesia. Dentals are very important!! Welcome to YT! Please keep us posted on your baby! |
Reese had her very first dental last year when she was 9 years old. I was also worried about the surgery due to her age but she did great. She only needed on tooth removed but it was practically falling out on its own so they didn't have to do much to get it out. She was very tired for the next 1.5 days but after that she was her same old self. Remember to follow the vet's directions for post op pain medicine and any antibiotics and your pup will be fine. |
