Sudden Change in Behavior We have a 7 month old adorable little yorkie. She's been sleeping in a 4x8 pen at night in our living room since we brought her home last November. Without warning a couple of nights ago she refused to sleep in there, and wanted to be with us in our bedroom. She cried all night until she managed a way to climb over the 30 inch barrier! We've also left her in there when we leave the house. Yesterday she managed to climb out again when we were gone, and now can't stand to be in there, whereas a few days before, she was perfectly content in there. What could be going on? I've had dogs for years, but I'm a yorkie newbie. I haven't seen this behavior before. Thanks for the counsel! Mike |
Hi Mike, Yorkies are prone to changing their minds overnight, especially during the first year. :D They also tend to love being with their humans. Max's pen was at my bedside when he was a pup. He insisted on sleeping in it until he was a year old. Then he decided he wanted to sleep in my bed. You could try putting a second pen in your bedroom. If you would prefer not to have her in your bedroom at night, work on tiring her out before bedtime. Then will have tough out some potential barking and crying until she understands the sleeping arrangements aren't going to change. Whatever you decide, sound like you need a taller pen. I had to switch to the 4' high xpen. If she is climbing the pen walls, then you will need one with a top for her safety. |
Our baby girl (and Maltese also many years ago) same thing. Slept in her crate like a good girl first year then one night wanted to sleep in our bed. Needless to say, I sleep with her in the crook of my neck/chest every night. So sweet. |

Totally agree...one day, thing A is just fine, the next day thing A is the enemy. Welcome to the Yorkie World, where we are the passengers :D! |
Yes, I also agree to put the pen (or another pen) in your bedroom. They really hate being that far away from us at night ;) And you might want to decide on your permanent sleeping situation once she's house trained - whether you eventually want her on your bed or for her to sleep in her own dog bed beside your bed. Reason I mention this is because if you don't want her to sleep on your bed (I didn't because I have allergies and also don't want to squish Scottie in my sleep if he was on the bed), then you'll have to be very strict about not caving into the midnight cries. This is the time when they try to the best of their abilities to get their ways. And it's very very very hard to ignore the long, never-ending, sad, torturous cries through the night. And once you cave once, you're doomed. :D *Speaking from experience of enduring sleep-deprived months of torturous cries throughout the night at all hours of the night...because I caved in the beginning :( **Scottie slept really well in the beginning as well before the midnight cries |
My boy has been pretty consistent throughout 7+ years of life. Oh yes he would love to sleep on the bed. But unless hubby is away and I crate the Blackies for his safety his crate it is. Sometimes after a night on the bed with me - we get a bit of whimpering the next but we just ignore it. And btw he snores the loudest! Beats hubby and the Blackies out hands down no question:) |
Thanks for all the great input! We put a 4x4 pen in our room and Gracie sleeps there without waking up all night. She just wanted to be with us - until (it sounds like) she suddenly changes her mind again! LOL This little dog is such a hoot. And this forum is a wonderful community and resource. Thanks, everyone. |
