Skinny dog needs to gain weight.. advice please. Hi I have a 2yr old girl that is skinny ( I can feel her spine ). I have only had her 2 days and she is always hungry and I feed her whenever she wants . I always have food and water out for her. My question is what kind of treats to give her to help her gain some weight. Thanks |
Try some wet food on her meals. |

Yeah, vet check first for any medical issues ie thyroid, liver, parasites, etc.... Also, the vet can give you an idea how much weight she may need to gain, how many calories to give her a day, and other general guidelines based on her size and health. Then, supplement with treats like Yorkiemom1 says. Some say boiled chicken with white rice, cheerios or just other treats in general. She can earn them as you train with her too. Since you two just met, this would be good for bonding and setting up general rules and establishing polite behaviour. You are right to keep the food available at all times like you have been. Some dogs can be free feed and not have weight issues, others cannot since they gain too much weight. Since yours is needing weight on, free feeding should be just fine. |
I would advocate staying away from boiled chicken and rice, simply because you are going from dog food to essentially table food, and then you are on the famous "Food-Merry-Go-Round.....wont want to eat dog food! No need to start something not necessary! If pup is eating well, and eating dog food, just feed MORE dog food, MORE frequently! |
Yes, avoid human food so she doesn't get attached to it. If you want to add a bit of yoghurt, it might help her digestion, but make sure it's mixed into dog food so she doesn't get any weird ideas. |
Hi she has a apointment with the vet. I always have food and water out for her at all times. She is eating Pro Plan Focus . That's what she was eating when I got her . I will ask my vet what she thinks also . Thanks |

I agree that getting the vet's advice and ruling out medical issues is key. My little boy is still a bit underweight as he was being fed adult food as a puppy in his previous home and was having to fight five other (bigger) dogs to get his share. Since he's been with us, we've been increasing his food intake gradually, and it seems to be working. This has been with our vet's guidance. The other helpful tip that the vet gave us was to put pro-biotic in his food (we get it from the vet) as it helped us transition him right away to a more appropriate diet. By using the pro-biotic, we didn't have to do the gradual transition from old to new food. We have the dogs on a homemade diet, using a recipe that the vet gave us. Our little girl is at a perfect weight (though she too was underweight when we got her) so we have her food amount at a stable level, though we keep adjusting her brother's to ensure gradual and healthy weight gain. Yup...ruling out medical issues is first and foremost. Beyond that, I'd be giving calorie-dense treats like chees and peanut butter, in moderation of course. |
My little man is 2 years old and I have had him since he was a puppy. I can not seem to get him to gain weight. I feed him dry food for small dogs, give him Pedigree Maro Bonz and have also tried Beneficial canned food. Any ideas to put weight on the little guy would sure be appreciated |
Hi just wanted to update everyone . Lucy has gained a little weight . I have been giving her cheese along with her treats . I don't think she was being free feed at her old home. I noticed that she picks at her food doing the day but at around 11pm she chows down before bed. The vet said she is free of parasites and is healthy except for she needs to gain a little weight.. |
