Port a play pen? Hello Everyone. As you all may or may not know I have a 14 week year old Yorkie named Bella and she is quickly approaching 6 months. We are in the process of house training her and let me tell ya it has not been easy lol. At first she was just doing it everywhere which is expected cuz she's still a pup and then she quickly started to get better by using the puppy pads and going outside, so we would reward her with treats. Now it seems like she is on a setback where sometimes if she wakes up she won't jump down(she's a tomboy) or whine to let me know she has to pee(like she was before) yet she will Pee right on the bed! We try and catch her everytime but she is sneaky and will do it right when we aren't looking. We don't get mad at her cause sheets can be washed and cleaned but we don't want her to do this all the time. I know some of you all suggested the Iris pen which I think it a great idea! I checked on petsmart and it can only be ordered online but they did have something called the port a play pen that is sold in the store. Do you all think they will be good as well? She has been doing good so far as peeing on the pad in our room but when she goes downstairs she starts peeing everywhere even found her favorite spot behind the couch where there is carpet. :( The rest of the house has hardwood floors so its easy to clean up but when it comes to carpet that can end up a terrible situation. Her daddy is with her during the day while im at work so she pretty much stays confined in one room until she goes outside to potty usually in the morning, afternoon and before bed time. With the port a pen or Iris pen she will be able to go downstairs because she will be in one spot and I can put a puppy pad in there with in case she has to go. Here is the link to the pen from Petsmart. Nature's Miracle Port-A-Play Pen | Playpens | PetSmart |
This pen looks just great...but just keep in mind that if pee gets on it, you probably won't totally be able to get the smell out... |

The playpen looks too big for a yorkie. Too many places to pee. Mocha uses a baby playpen we bought at a yard sale for $15. When he was a puppy we put potty pad on one side (Costco size pad is firs exactly half the playpen) and his bed on the other side. The same idea with crate training apples here. Dogs will not potty where they sleep. Right away he learned to use the pad. It does take a long time to get him switch from the pad to outside when he got older. When he was a puppy the small space actually makes him feel more secure. He is 6 now and still sleeps in the playpen at night. He prefers it that way. But no more pee pad in the playpen. |
I got a pen like this for my pups, thinking at first that this would be a good alternative to crating. It was a good option at first, until one of them had a pee pee inside. I did the bet I could with cleaning it, but obviously there was some scent left inside. They then essentially started using it like a large pee pad. It is a real shame, because it is a great design and folds up into a small carry-pack. We decided to put away until potty training is further advanced. They both really enjoyed playing in it before and I can see it being something we could use when we travel or need to confine them to a small space. But for now, we are not quite there. Our dogs were not potty trained when we adopted them at 10.5 months, so we had almost a year of no training to overcome. Four months down the line, and we are about 95% there. So we may bring it back in the near future. I think a small X-pen might be a better choice, as you could continue the pee pad training inside of the pen and there would not be any tempting textiles for your pup. You mentioned you had wood floors, so I can see that working well. |
