Help with matted hair !!! Hi , as some of you know I picked up my girl Lucy , well she settled in great she walk great on a leash and only get on sofa if I say she can the only thing she is doing is trying to dominate my male chi by trying to hump him, he is only 5lbs and I was told she was 5lbs but more like 7 to 8 lbs. But here is where I need help her hair around her neck is matted pretty bad does anyone have any idea on how I could get them out. I don't want to shave her . Her belly is also matted I will shave that part. I did have to cut her some bangs she had what I think was gum in them. She is a real sweetheart .. I can't complain too much I did get her for free she came with all her belonging , crate , food , and treats.. Other than her hair and being kinda thin she seams healthy, her teeth look real good . I am making a vet appointment tomorrow for her to get a check up. Thanks |
I usually put in some coconut oil and work at the mat with my fingers, then a fine tooth comb. Some swear by cornstarch but I have not tried it. If she has a pretty even coat, just a few mats I would work on them, but if she is a hot mess or a choppy coat, I would shave down and start fresh. She'd probably appreciate the short cut for the summer anyway. If she gets restless, just do a few mins and then let her be. Then go back in an hour or so and try to work on it again. Don't try to get it all in one go. Most likely you will be a little rougher and she might get scared. |
Thanks she has been very good at letting me pick at the mats . I will keep working on them . It might take awhile. |
Use a buttercomb aka mustache comb - our YT member Mimimomo sells them at great prices! You might try sprinkling corn starch into the matted area as that can help working them out. |

Also, if you don't have one already... MADAN BRUSH!!!! I'm so in love with that brush.. lol |
Here is the link to Mimimomo's combs - get the "mustache" comb, it's awesome for picking at mats and working them out: toplinepet.com |

My dog has pretty thick hair so I didn't even notice it looking any thinner where the mat was. My little girl gets matted under her chin, chest area from her sweaters. |
I just wanted to let everyone know that I have been working on her matted hair and I got about 25% of them out. She is looking so much better. Thanks for all the good advise. |

Please, definitely update when it happens!! |
I will keep everyone updated . It may take a few days . I been takings it slow just a little bit at a time. I just picked a area and that was what I worked on for the day just a few minutes at a time . |
Thanks for the advice everyone! I just discovered a few mats on my little girl around her neck and I am afraid to hurt her. I will try the cornstarch trick. I never had mats with my other Yorkie. I am wondering if my little girl's coat is very different, or maybe it is the shampoo that the groomer is using? I had read about mats before, but this is the first time that I am having to deal with them. |
how about some type of no more tangle spray? My mom used to use it on me lol. Don't they make for dogs? |
Update : I got 90% of the mats out !! Now she will go to the groomer and get a spa day.. She has been been so good at letting me work on the mats. There were a few mats that I had to cut mostly on her feet. (They were bigger than her feet). So she will be getting a hair cut. But now she will no have to be shaved bald.. |
