How to make ur puppy eat So after the scare I had today with Layla, I'm to make her eat, how do I do that, she is to eat at least 1/4 cup kibble and at least 1/4 of cup of urgent care can food, I let her food down to get when ever she wants but I'm also having to take her to her food and try to make her eat, I put in my hand for her to eat sometimes she will eat out of my hand sometime not!! |
Some folks boil chicken and chop it up into tiny pieces and mix it in, others say parmesan cheese mixed in. I would try to start training with her, and give her kibble and lots of praise as her treats. See if that increases her consumption. |

Good mommie...stress will cause their blood sugar to drop too so you are doing great! I would get jars of Gerber chicken baby food and let her lick what she wants, off your finger....do this every 2-4 hours, depending on how much she eats at each setting....drastic conditions call for drastic measures, and right now, you need to get some age on her and some food in her, so you do what you have to do....I cant remember how old you said she is....usually 16-20 weeks, they are over this, they have enough tummy size and appetite to provide themselves with the required amount of food needed to keep them upright and running!.....This is another reason I always encourage people to free feed until the baby is a year old........Just keep feeding the kibble...I would suggest you get that Health Extension with the itty bitty tiny little kibble...most dogs love it and the little ones can manage the tiny size very well....have no idea what the eye doctor...or dermatologist...or dentist...whatever he is, recommends, and have no idea what he rates this food , but trust ME, this is GREAT food and if she will eat it, it is GREAT for her and it is tiny so she can manage it!!! |
I am going through the same thing with Roxie right now! It is so scary! She is 9 weeks old. The Vet has me syringe feeding her. I don't understand why she doesn't eat? I free feed her also. Kibble is always available. It is 2:14AM and I am wide awake with her on my chest. She won't sleep at night without me. This makes it difficult since I then can't sleep. How old is your yorkie? |

My little Triangle Teddy bear (Chewie) was a bit picky those first few days, and is VERY picky with water. I put her on soft food for about four days while she adjusted- a brand particular to petco- and then to get her to drink water I put water in her Royal Canin mini pup food and hand feed her. Once a day, I put two tablespoons of homemade chicken broth into her little metal bowl to continue to encourage drinking. There is onion EVEN in the low sodium broth- even at less than 2%, so if you ever feel like trying chicken broth to make it tastier, please consider making it from scratch. Thankfully Chewie loves eating so it's not as much of an issue, but it sure was the first week. |
bone broth Scottie is really smart, he picks out anything that's non-kibble (i.e. if there were chicken or cheese bits, he'd be able to pick it out crumble by crumble). If you want to keep trying with the kibble, try soaking the kibble in bone broth. This link has a video and a blurb on how to make it and the benefits of bone broths for dogs (old, young, or sick): Bone Broth Is Excellent Nourishment for Older Pets I personally would avoid canned broths as there is a lot of sodium in it. It's good for them and the bone/meat flavour infuses the kibble and I think dogs really like it. It's good for hydration too. Very nutritious. |
I would try SPRINKLING the Parmesan cheese on TOP of the food, instead of mixing it in the food, the pungent smell is stronger if sitting on top of her food. Boiled chicken breast if she will eat it. Hand feed if that's what you have to do. .... Yorkiemom1 gives GREAT advise. |
Thanks for your advice! Where do you purchase that kibble? I am in Michigan. Brought Roxie into Vet this morning. She isn't dehydrated, so that is good. She lost a 1/2 oz. so she is now 14.5 ozs.! She gave me Carafate to settle her tummy so she will eat. She also said to give her baby food like chicken with kibble, try at least 6 times a day. I hope this helps! |

Availability and Exercise... I leave three flavors of food +water out 24/7, and make sure they all get to run/play/walk a couple times a day. They eat when and what they want, and are very healthy animals. I check the Bowls once or twice a day, fill as necessary on MY clock, not theirs. |
