Clothes for Yorkies I read Yorkies are very sensitive to cold but my Aunt told me her grandmother had a Yorkie for years and he never wore clothes and she said wearing clothes makes them sensitive to cold, is this true? Theres a place near me that sell lots of dog clothes very cheap. |
They should wear a sweater or coat if they are outside in cold temps. Yorkies do not have fur, just hair |

No, it does not - it protects them from the cold, otherwise they could not handle. |

I saw your other post you are a new yorkie daddy. There is an awesome book on amazon I recently bought for myself I love-called yorkies for dummies. It is full of helpful info for any yorkie owner :) |

Totally! He will be super comfy ! |
Nothing wrong with yorkies wearing clothes! Your aunt's grandmother could have had a yorkie with cotton hair, which is the less desired coat, though it makes them look like a teddy bear and keeps them warmer. The silky coat, which is the standard, is like human hair, with no undercoat to trap in heat, so in the cold winter months, yes they do need a coat or sweater. Some people hate seeing clothes on dogs, but I think if a dog is cold, to neglect putting on some warm clothes for them is close to abuse esp in very cold climates. |
Do Australian yorkies have a undercoat? |
What do you mean Australian yorkies? Never heard of those. There is only one type of yorkshire terrier, their origins are from England. There are the Biewers, which are from Germany, but their category as a different breed is still hotly debated. Some say they are the same as traditional yorkies, only a difference in color of the coat, others say they are a breed in it of itself. |

If an Australian terrier doesn't have an undercoat, then a mix of the two won't have one either bc yorkies don't, even the cotton coated ones don't. But it calling him an Australian yorkie is misleading. He's a mix. |

As for if they have an undercoat, I don't think so? if they do it's not much, as yorkies have no undercoat. |
He does look like a silky too but also looks like a Australian terrier. They both seem to have different behaviours and stuff so they are probably not the same. |

What Is the Difference Between a Yorkie & a Silky Terrier - Pets |
Also, when you have a breed based mostly off two breeds (even established ones), they may tend to favor one or the other at times. Or in some cases, a nice mix of the two. If this dog is half yorkie and half Australian terrier then it's what us folks in the USA call Silky Terriers but as the link I've presented mentions, it'll be Australian Silky Terriers, or some may even refer the silky part as yorkies, but they cannot be officially called yorkies, because there's only one established breed of yorkshire (yorkie) terrier. Biewer terriers are relatively newer than Yorkshire and though very strongly related from that breed's lineage, they are very specific in coloration as well as the other poster mentions, are established from Germany and not from Yorkshire, Britain. |

As for cloths they do serve a purpose for cold, sun, rain they are also fun. My husband and I have a lot of fun dressing our girls up to go out or just a special day. My Hubby likes buying coats for them, He cant seem to pass by a cute little coat. So just have fun with it if you want It doesn't matter what others say. |

1 Attachment(s) I love that you're asking all these questions cuz it shows how much you care and that's a wonderful thing! When it's cold, Piper wears a thick (lined) harness on our walks; she moves pretty quickly so we both stay comfortable as we clip along...Now when we go shopping and it's cold, I always put her in a sweater and she still shivers 'til the car warms up. Our little ones need us to stand up for them and to protect them; we know what they need better than anyone else. I'm so pleased you and Pluto found one another; you're both lucky guys! |
I have a fluffy harness its very warm, I don't know if it will fit Pluto though, we got it for our passed Jack russell and it didn't fit him. |
I have a feeling you'll figure it all out as you go along! And take pictures so we can see what works; that'll help the rest of us figure stuff out, too! |
