Vaccines for 2 Year Old I just received notice via email that my baby is due for: DA2PP + Lepto Fecal examination Kennel cough vaccine Rabies Heartworm test Are the shots normal to be given together the 2nd year. I know it took through 7 months last year to get all of my baby's vaccines. Just curious! Any help is greatly appreciated. His appointment is Wednesday, March 9. |
I'm sure that the vaccinations can be spaced out a little, but make sure that the Rabies vaccination is done in time to meet your state's legal requirements. |
If she's 2, she should not need any of these shots yet. Rabies is (typically) given approx 4-6 months old, then after one year old, thereafter every 3 years. Each state has different laws regarding rabies. However all of the other vaccines should be given no more than every 3 years. Unless if you decide to do lepto and bordatella (which are optional, more dependent on situation) they do need to be given yearly to work effectively but they are not "core" vaccines. Jackson is 7 1/2 years old and hasn't had DHPP since his one year old shots. I'm going to boost his distemper vaccine one more time just to be "safe" this year but after that, I'll just be doing rabies every 3 years as per the law for the remainder of his life. Oh and heartworm tests yearly ARE important and typically required to buy more heartworm medicine. |
I know you only need the heartworm test if their medication has lapsed. Has he been on heartworm meds every single month? Then I don't think you need the test. |

Thank you for the responses everyone, and I've lost my mind. My baby is 1 -- I must have mistyped. I did it on my cell phone. I apologize. Thankfully, most everyone's answers are related to the heartworm test. Yes, my vet does require the heartworm test every year. According to her, they can get heartworms even on medication (although rare). However, mosquitoes are horrible in Mississippi. We have them all year long. As to the rabies vaccine, I did find out that he will receive it this year, and then every 3 years after that. It was the other vaccines I was concerned about being given with the rabies vaccine. Again, I apologize for my craziness! |

Another reason heartworm tests are important is because IF they are positive for heartworms and continue to take the heartworm meds, I've heard it can cause harm and/or kill them. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. |
My vet will not give rabies and regular shots together, too much for the little dogs |

Main concern here is the Lepto - why are you getting it? Most people will not ever, ever get it unless it is truly epidemic in your specific area. The risks of the vaccine itself are usually greater than the risk of getting the disease. I would be asking your vet for prevalence and incidence in your area. Rabies - get this shot on its own. Distemper/Parvo - get 2 weeks apart from the Rabies. |
Thank you everyone for your help. My baby is too small for the Lepto. He was 4.8 lbs. after his LCP surgery . Now that he is feeling better and more active, he is down to 4.4 lbs. The vet was pleased with the amount of food we give him, because she said it is easy for the little ones to get overweight. She was also very pleased post LCP surgery. She said he has no residual muscle weakness and is much farther along than he should be. Feel much better now. |
