Choking and Gagging Does anyone else have a problem with their Yorkie choking and gagging? Scooter will be fine then all of a sudden he will start to make a half choking half coughing sound. He doesn't do this after eating but there is no set time that he does this. It happens sometimes only once a day but other times it's several times a day. He's healthy and has a good appetite. I had a Shih Tzu that use to do this and the vet said her trachea was short and if she happened to lie with her neck on her paws or otherwise put pressure on her trachea that would happen. Any ideas? |
Mine does it too. I have no clue why |
I have noticed Monty do this a couple of times as well. Was a bit shocking at first. I use a chest harness on him not a collar so I know his throat hasn't been distressed. Interesting. |
Duchess does the same thing. She usually does it in spurts. Sometimes she will cough and gag for several days in a row. Then nothing for several days in a row. No other symptoms....eating, sleeping, pooping just fine and extremely energetic. I mention it to the vet and she didn't seem too concern. However, we are monitoring it to see if it gets any worse. |
Both of mine do this. Sometimes it's after drinking water. Other times I have noticed they had been licking themselves or a blanket so I think they have gotten hair in their mouths. |
It must be a Yorkie thing. Otherwise he is as healthy as can be. Weird....... |
Look up reverse sneezing - does it sound like that? |
My yorkie is 2 years old now and he has done this noise since he was 5 months old. At first it scared me and now I am use to it. He will do it a few times a day and sometimes not for a week and then he is back to doing it everyday. I think he has a very sensative trachea. He chews and swallows everything. So when he has gotten into something he does it more often. My vets are not concerned. One told me acid reflux problems and another told me collapse trachea. This is what he sounds like when he does it. https://youtu.be/iWA32rh7mfU I had a shih tzu too. He was the best dog He lived to be 16 how old was yours? |
Both of my Shih Tzus only lived to 12 years. That is such a sweet breed. I looked up reverse sneezing but Scooter doesn't close his mouth. He opens it and puts his head down like he gagging or trying to get something out of his throat. Next time he's at the vet I'll mention it. |
Abby has been doing this for the last two weeks and I seem to remember she had a bout of it last year. I am starting to think it is a seasonal allergy for her. The pollen is crazy here right now. |
Ya I know it is not reversed sneeze. My shih tzu did this and it is completely different. More like a hack noise with the mouth open. |
My 5 year old female also sounds like she is choking. When I go to her, she is fine and thinks I'm crazy rubbing her throat. |
Yeah, my little 1 yr old does this too. Look & sounds just like the video. Someone please figure this out. Sometimes happens after a drink but a lot of times right out of the blue. Hum... |
Seems like a lot of yorkies do this. Hopefully it is nothing to worry about. |
I'm thinking it's either a trachea issue or something a bit more minor like allergies or they just tend to get thing caught in their throats. I get this way all the time at work because of hairs, dust and products, etc. Yorkies are so low to the ground, it don't surprise me they sniff up more stuff that messed with their sinus/throats. My girl honks/oinks and snorts often. I've once been told it could be because her nasal cavity/area is small or allergies. We used to have a male yorkie that did it too but he had allergies, as well. |
