Potty Training support needed! I know you guys have given so much support to those with hard to train pups. I'm feeling kind of down tonight. Cooper knows to potty outside. I take him out every 2 to 2 1/2 hours a day. He goes to work with me so he's never alone. Seems like we go a week and then there are accidents or maybe it's on purpose? Do they magically turn 1 and finally get it? I'm in the process of teaching him to ring the bell in hopes it clicks to let us know when he has to go out. He is 7 months old and a great little guy, but boy it's so hard not to get mad and be patient! |
Seriously, potty training is *hard* - it surrrrrre is...you're not alone, not at all. We all feel your pain. Keep being consistent and send the same message at all times, and you will get there! |

We got him at 10 weeks old on Oct 9th, 2015. From day one I have taken him out every 2 to 2 1/2 hours. He sleeps with us and has never had an accident, but in the first 3 months I was up maybe twice a night. Now for the most part he sleeps from 10:00 at night to 5:30 to 6 am without waking me... (yes he does let me know he needs to go potty) :) Once in a while he will wake me to get a drink and go potty. So I know he can hold his bladder for quite awhile. And he will let us know if we are sitting in the living room with either a tiny woof or jump up and tap my leg. I ask do you have to go potty, and he will do his happy dance. Dave or I are always with him outside, I don't trust the owls, hawks, eagles and coyotes that live around upHe always gets a treat when he goes outside. But at least once a week he has an accident - sometimes 2 x a week. The little stinker knows it too!. We call it the guilty look at many of you know. I'm just hoping he grows out of this. |
By the way thank you so much for the replies, I try not to show him my irritation at him when he potties in the house. I appreciate the support! |

Note that from my experience, they wanna pee more when they're in motion (that's why they can hold it in longer when they've been sleeping all night). So before playing, let them pee first to prevent accidents. If there are accidents and you happen to catch them in action, you can do a firm "NO" so they at least know it's a no-no. If they've already had the accident and you discover it after the fact, it's too late and you'll just have to clean it up irritation-free :P Nature's Miracle products are great for getting rid of scents so they pee in the same spots again. Oh and also for me, it worked best to prevent accidents by having Scottie within my sight at all times. He was first tethered to me if I went farther than his allowable space. Otherwise, he was kept in a small space - gradually earning more and more space within my home as he "earned it" by having no accidents. If you have a big home, you'll have to do it very very gradually ;) Lucky for me, my home is super tiny. :D |
