We have a new Baby... Hello again, our girl Roxy is doing great now... We have the Addison disease under control. She is doing great on medication. So now we have rescued another silky yorkie. She was thrown out of a car on a country road when we were having the blizzard of 2016. 2 ft of snow.. I saw her on facebook and they put her in our local shelter which is not really great. My husband went to the shelter and they had her isolated and would not let him see her.. They said she was scared and didn't trust her.. He was like really she has been through hell no wonder she is like that.. So I called and they said she was un-adoptable... I said ok and broke our heart... Lo and behold on 2/23 we got a call from a rescue group and we picked her up and she is precious... Scared and skiddish... here is some questions for you experts and friends... She will not move on a leash.... sits like a rock.... picked her up to go outside and she just layed flat and would not move... She will walk around in the house... will not go potty outside... not good but know we have to let her get use to our home.. Is there anything we can do to help this along. She is a precious gift to us... |
First.. THANK YOU and your family for bringing her home! Have you tried putting the leash on her inside the home? Let her drag it around and get used to the feeling. Will she walk around outside without the leash? Is she food/toy driven? If so, while on the leash, perhaps you can tempt her to move by offering treats. Sort of like putting a carrot in front of a donkey to keep him moving. |
It can be much harder to figure out the "right" way to train the ones that were abused. Mario was abused too, but good news for you and us, is he is about 95% recovered. Now, no one but me would know now that he had been abused. I have not seen signs in some time, but today I came in the house carrying a longboard for a project and he got all hang dog and cowered. Soooo, we had to work that out. We just work through every issue as they present themselves. For the leash issue, yeah try hooking one on her for short periods of time outside (if you have an enclosed area) over several weeks to months and see if she will adapt to walking around with it. If she will then try showing her a treat, stepping a tiny bit forward and tapping your leg with the treat. See if you can inch her along with treats, gentle, soothing praise and lots of love. She may be afraid you are going to load her up and dump her or something. Love and patience can work miracles on these furry kids :) |
You and your husband are awesome for rescuing this baby. TLC will be the key. Try laying the leash just on the ground and see if she will investigate it by herself. Best wishes. |
My Piper had, and has, her little foibles. I wouldn't "push" your new baby right now; just give her time to get know her new home and people. I believe as she starts to trust and relax, she'll be more receptive to training. You're obviously very loving folks and she'll soon totally love you, too. So wonderful of you and husband to adopt this little darling. |
