Agility Training? Anyone doing it with their dog? I am seriously considering agility training for The Majestic Mr Monty!! He is 8 months old and I have only had him for 2 weeks and am about to begin obedience training. When I was looking for a trainer, I came across this fabulous lady who does 6 levels of obedience, agility, tracking, therapy etc etc. Exciting! So now I am doing some research to see what people are doing and how they are liking doing it! |

You've probably run across this, but they say don't start any serious agility classes until after at least a year. You want your pup's growth plates to close before asking him to jump and sprint too much. We only competed for one year because Eddie had surgery on his knee, and I decided I didn't want him to put any more stress on it than he had to. I started training my other dog, Jillie, as well, but found out she had mild LP and I pulled her out of it for the same reason. Just for fun, here are a couple videos. The first is Eddie in competition, the second is Jillie's second class. http://youtu.be/_iGGkhFm1Bg http://youtu.be/w_f_Yi9fuAY |
Most agility classes will not take a pup whose growth plates have not completed growing. Patellas need to be seriously assessed before beginning agility. Also be sure the instructor has experience with small dogs in agility. My Cali is just under 4 pounds and we do agility for about 3 years now. I hate the name, but check out TDAA ( teacup dog agikity Assoc). Their equipment and meets are got dogs under 20pounds. |

Nope, but I'd like to in the future. I am in competitive obedience classes with her now. I have not done agility yet as she's young, and just had surgery on her knee. Once she is older (over 2) I may get her in to it if the vet says the knee repair will hold up- and I think it will. |
