how old is to old to spay I have a 12 year old dalmation that I want to spay. Is that to old/I am going to ask the vet but I htought I'd ask you. Do they ever stop going into heat? |
Older dogs at shelters are altered as seniors then placed. I don't think that any age is too old to alter a dog. |
I don't think that is too old to spay either. But be sure you get a geriatric blood panel done beforehand to check on her organ function as well as make sure she is okay. If that works out, you might consider asking your Vet to put her in IV during the procedure. It reduces the trauma of anasthesia and surgery. You can be sure if she ends up with a pyometria which can still happen out of nowhere on an intact female, she will have to be spayed under very scary and risky circumstances. |
Does anyone know if they ever stop going into heat like women (doggie menopause) |
Just curious about why do you want to spay her now? I am sure if she is in good health otherwise, it is probably not a problem. As to whether they ever stop going into heat, I have read that dogs do not go through menopause like we humans do. That is all I know. I would have your vet evaluate her health and maybe evn discuss some less invasive procedures like tubal ligation to make the surgery easier on her since she is so old. |

She is in heat now and its driving me crazy. I know I should of done it a long time ago but I had a male dalmation that was sick and old with alot of health problems (lots of money) and since she was healthy I put it on the backburner. We did everything we could for the male (lucky-his name) surgery, medication shots etc but he had to be put down. I don't want that to happen again. It's a horrible thing to go through when you have to make that choice. We used to breed and just never got her spayed when we decided no more. She had 4 litters and with the disney craze and so many in shelters, we tried to do the right thing and quit. I guess we forgot to complete the process of doing the right thing and spaying her. I'm Bad! :( |
they often don't stop cycling but often too, instead of coming in every six months or whatever the current cycle is, it becomes a longer cycle when they get much older. I haven't heard of any that stop but someone in a previous post said their female did. |
My vet said it's never too late because I got Sabrina done at 10 years and uterine infection and her "horns" were badly infected and he said I was just in time - she would have died in another week or so. I'd do it if you want a few more years with her, but at 12, it's a toss up. I'd check with your vet. |
A female never stop having heat seasons . |
At that age, it's one that you really have to jut discuss with your vet. Some dogs get so weak and "old" at that age that it's not safe to put them under. Then there are some like my 14 year old mix who acts like a 5 year old and he still goes under for his teeth cleanings. Talk to your vet. So long and she's still very healthy, there should be no problems putting her under to get her spayed. |
