Update! Well, I found out two things. Due to pre-anesthesia blood work, it came out the Bentley has kidney disease and therefore is not a candidate for anesthesia. We are working on getting him to eat a Science Diet homemade food diet as recommended by our vet. We are going to recheck after a couple of weeks to see if there is any improvement. He went from 3.5 lbs in the last year to 2.73 lbs. He has a BUN of 94. The vet said he could have 5 days or 2 years. :( We have agreed not allow him to suffer but will do everything we can to keep him happy and with us as long as we can. As side note: my mother died almost 20 years ago from end stage renal disease. Toward the end, she said, "If I was a dog, they'd take me out back and shoot me, but because I am human, they make me suffer until the end." Porsche is borderline, so she is going through with her cleaning tomorrow. Her whole bottom 6 incisors move as if they are a bridge, one unit. I talked to the tech who does the cleaning to warn her. She said they will all have to be removed. Porsche is also on the special diet as well. Thank you for all your comments and concerns. You are all such a wonderful support group. I don't know what I would do without you all (ya'll). |
Do you have them on RX food ? Also fish oil is important for kidney issues. I just buy it from my vet. The label says 1 gel cap per 30 lbs but that dosage gives mine yucky poos so I use a pin to open an end & use 1/2 per day. |

teeth Well, Porsche had 16 teeth removed today! Ouch! I certainly hope she is feeling better soon.:( |
When my last Yorkie was 13 we stopped putting her under for dental. She was already on a monthly anesthesia-free regime and we stuck with that as it seemed to work well for her. Truly, once we got her on the monthly regime, her teeth were never better. For her at least, it seemed to work much better in keeping her teeth healthy then yearly full dentals when she was put under. But when she was younger, we did a combination of the two. In our area we have the option of other 15-20 minute monthly dentals or 1 hour dentals (done a few times a year)---all anesthesia-free. Some groomers offer these services, but ensure that your dog is under the supervision of a vet for this. We take our dogs to a local vet who gets a dental service in for the monthly service, with the vet supervising the whole time. |
