Yorkie putting everything in her mouth when she goes outside Every time I take Bella outside to go potty, she tries to put everything in her mouth from rocks, to pieces of mulch to snow to everything else! When I see her trying to put something in her mouth I make a loud sound and tell her no. This does not seem to be working!!!! I also try to control where she goes on the leash too. Any tips or advice would be helpful! |
You might carry some Cheerios or a favorite toy with you so when you say no, you can immediately offer her a more pleasant replacement...It's important that Bella learn she cannot try to chomp everything she finds. If you should drop pills or the like; you need to be able to prevent her from scarfing up something that could damage her. |
When Peanut was younger, he would pick up everything too. You just need to be consistent about not letting them pick up things they shouldn't have. When we would go to the park, he would try to pick up every leaf and twig. I started taking a small soft toy with us and would give that to him to carry. It seemed to help. It should get better as your little one gets older. They really are just like little babies, everything goes in there month. You need to watch them every minute.:) |
Start teaching the command "leave it". If you need tips on how, I can link some. Mario will leave food I place(drop) right in front of him for longer than 5 min. He is so funny about it too. I put him in a stay command then drop food where he can reach it, but immediately say leave it. He will then "snub" the food. He will not even look at it :D. |
Yes, I would love the link. That might be helpful for her. Thanks |
Here a few (I have not read them, so make sure they meet your criteria/philosphy first) Volhard Dog Training and Nutrition: Library: "Leave It" Command https://positively.com/dog-behavior/...cues/leave-it/ How to Train Your Dog to Leave It - For Dummies And a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=asVQYYSWPJc I always dropped one treat just out of his reach and said leave it. If Mario tried to get it, then I said no and moved him back and stated leave it again, once he left it for short periods (count of 5 or so) then I picked up that treat and gave him two treats from my other hand almost at the same time as picking up the one treat. Repeat until he got the idea down pat. I increased time, decreased his distance to the treat and increased my distance away from him slowly. Lots of praise. |

I noticed that Scottie's pick /sniff everything habits slowed down a bit as he got older though... |
