Moving to NYC Hello all, I will be moving to NYC with my 4-lb 2.5 year old girl, Jazzy. We currently live in an area with lots of grass and she goes out to pee about every 4 hours. Not so much the case in NYC. She used to be trained to pee-pee pads when I first got her, but I haven't really used them with her in years. Should I try to re-train her to these (um how?) or maybe make a potty pad using a washer tray, cat litter, then astroturf on top? Finally, the good news is that my new work is very dog friendly...the CEO keeps his small dog in the office always, so I'm hoping I can work things out for Jazzy to come along. |
Great news about the new office! That's a huge plus! Are you moving into an apt building? If you have a balcony I'd make a box for a piece of sod. Probably more inviting to go pee on than astroturf. But make sure any gaps between posts or railing on the balcony is covered in chicken wire or similar so she can't fall out between them. If no balcony then try the sod box in the laundry room or bathroom or wherever works. Take her to the box and say your pee command and point. She'll get it eventually. I wouldn't use the cat litter though. Just lay a piece of sod in the box and change it out every once in a while. |
Formally from NYC, I walked my 3 dogs everyday, no grass. You can walk your dogs if that's what you want, it may take them a bit longer to do their business if they are use to grass, but they will make. Then I moved to Pa. commuted to NY job, had 2 dogs 11 y/o an 5 y/o that had to now use pee pads, they learned quickly to use the pads. The choice is yours. |
I was also going to suggest the balcony option...will you have one? |

If I had a balcony that the bars were too far apart I rigged something up and attached it to the inside. On was a baby gate I deconstructed and strapped in place. Most of the balconies had something already in place or were designed. My Lola used to love to sunbathe out there and I think she got a kick that she could go outside whenever she pleased. You should not have a problem finding a place for her to go, but if she's used to every four hours it's probably best to figure out something indoors. Four hours goes by in a flash in that city, you won't want to be out and worried about her. Keeping my fingers crossed she gets to work to work with you! That would be so awesome! |
