Unfamiliar Territory.. Need Advice Hey everyone. I need your advice. An old Friend of mine asked if I could babysit her Dog and have him over night. He is a cross between a Pug and a French Bulldog. Oscar hasn't met him yet. From what she's told me, he sounds like he's pretty much got the same temperament as Oscar. I've suggested that we let them meet up first, to see how they get on. If everything goes well and they love each other. Which I think they will (They both love Dogs) My question is, what can I do to make the whole thing go well? Oscar might think that we've adopted this Dog and might not like it? I was thinking, that this is the perfect opportunity for us all, to see what it would be like if we did have a second Dog. I've never had another Dog in my House before. So this should be interesting. Any advice and tips would be really appreciated. He's meant to be staying here next Saturday and Sunday. |
Here's what I was told and it worked really well when a dog came to stay with us. Best to meet on neutral ground so meet outside your house and go for a short walk together. In the house keep the new dog on the lead while you show them around, only let them go in the rooms you want them to access. Put their stuff, bed and food bowls where you will keep them and set the boundaries very early on. Best of luck :) |
Good advice. I believe meeting on neutral territory helped my 2 boys. We had a little work relative to establishing eating dishes and beds. We separated their dishes by a couple feet and supervised. Probably would be helpful for your guest doggy to bring his bed along with him. |
Also would not hurt, for the second meeting to be at Oscar's house, and then the pup leaves. They both benefit from this because they both have had the experience of this being just a visit and then they both get back to their normal. When we had to leave Mario with a friend for a week, we made sure to take him there and bring him home at least once, so he gets the idea it is not for good. Of course, Mario was abandoned/mistreated before, so we had more to worry about in that regard. |
Thank you Guys so much. We met Alfie at the park yesterday. It went quite well. They were barking at each other at first and then they calmed down. We let them off their leads and they had great fun! Alfie has figured out that Oscar hates getting his bum sniffed. So he did that whenever he wanted Oscar to chase him. I could tell there was no hard feelings from Oscar, because he would chase him back, tail wagging. I've suggested having Alfie come to mines and then leave so he knows he's not living here. I hope she agrees to that. She told me this story yesterday, which has made me rather nervous of her taking her Dog to her Boyfriend's house for the first time to have a sleepover. She was there too, and they ended up having to leave and go back to her home, because he wouldn't settle.. I hope he doesn't bark and cry all night at mines. The sleeping arrangement has been dealt with. She does not allow her Dog to sleep in her room. So he will be in my living room. I feel sorry for him :( But, I will treat him the same way that he get's treated at home. I would hate anyone that let Oscar do something, that I don't let him do. So I will follow that rule for Alfie :) |
