Nervous nelly in the car! Any advice on getting my puppy (4.5 most) to settle in the car? She shakes so much and is very nervous. She will be a frequent traveler so I need advice!! |
My 1 year old still doesn't like the car. I hope he will get better as time goes on. I take him for short rides less than 10 miles about 3 x a week. Just keep your car rides short for a while. |
Mine travel well in their car seat (Snoozer). It seems to make them feel more secure then just riding on the seat. Do you take your little one some where they like to go, like to the park for a walk etc. All I have to do is say "Lets go to the park" and mine can't wait to get in the car. They get so excited. Hope this helps. |
My Zeusy wants to go in the car, then he hates it once he's in the car. Pants, swallows, yawns -- the same things I do on long trips except I have anxiety medication. He does do better with his Thundershirt or Thundersweater on, because like you, he has to travel in the car. When we go home to Alabama, he has to go because we can't leave him home alone for that period of time. I am at a loss half the time as to what to do other than deal with the anxiety. I have purchased some spray to use on the next trip, and we'll see how that goes. His Thundershirt has a patch on the back/shoulder for you to put the spray. Hopefully, it will help! |
Max was nervous in the car his first year. A car seat helped him, maturity and more car rides too! I blogged about some more tips: Dog Travel and Car Anxiety - Dog Life and Style |
Lola gets nervous also she starts shaking and then throws up we tried Benadryl and Dramamine neither one worked but we're trying just taking her on short rides now |
Car sick Have you tried the drug Cerenia, it is for this and a great anti nausea drug. The Snoozer seat they really love. |

First was to elevate them so they could see out. I used a laundry basket lined with a blanket and king sized pillow. This was especially helpful for my one little peanut that got car sick. Two was to take them out to car and not go anywhere, just hang out and chat for a bit in the car and then go back inside. I also added taking them out to eat into the mix. They love this. We go to a drive in or drive thru and chill out and munch. Sometimes out for ice cream or ices in the nicer weather. My Ruby is four and she still shivers a little but quickly settles down once inside. She's a real mamas girl tho. I wouldn't use her as a normal Yorkie gauge lol. |
