switching to adult food from puppy
 

hi- so I am in the process of switching from puppy to adult food. I did notice her stool is a bit soft. I have been going slowly but is any amount of soft normal during the switch or no? I have to drop off her stool sample today for her annual but I definitely want experienced yorkie moms and dads input too. thanks.

It's not abnormal, no. My 4 never had issues when I used to switch, but I really think it's unique to each dog. If the softness doesn't clear up, I'd then consider a different food. With your new food, did you stay within the same/similar protein and carb source?

She was on nutrisource puppy and I wanted her on adult toy breed so Its blue for toy breeds. What's happening though is she loves it so much, she's picking out the blue and having that and leaving the old food until later when she's starving I guess lol. My vet said blue is known for high protein so I should go slower.

Zeusy ate the Simply Nourish chicken/turkey grain free puppy food and switched to Simply Nourish adult small breed chicken/turkey grain free food. He did the same thing -- ate all the adult food out and left the puppy and wouldn't eat it. We did see some change in the stool for a couple of weeks. Now all is good.

How old is your baby? They are growing and cells continue to grow and mature until 8-12 months old...I would leave my baby on puppy food until at very least 8 months old....you want all the cells in that precious little body, to reach their maximum potential!

She's 18 months :)

Stick a fork in her, she is done!!! She is a "full growed lady"!!! You can safely switch to an adult blend of your choice! No secret, I prefer and recommend Royal Canin....it has served me and my dogs, including all my breeding dogs very well, during/through all stages of their life from cradle to grave, very well.

I see the breeder im buying my next pup does as well. Yikes. Maybe I should switch to Royal canin?

It would certainly be easier on you....everyone eating the same thing! Breeders dont choose to feed RC because it is a cheap dog food.....any of us that have fed it for any length of time, see what it does for our dogs in all aspects of their life stages. The results in our dogs, tells the tale!

OK! So I started her on the adult Yorkshire terrier royal canin... she LOVES it, but the pieces are just so much larger then her other food (nutrisource puppy or Blue toy breed adult). So she treats it more like treats, she takes the royal canin out of her bowl (because I am still weaning her off the other food, its mixed in) and brings it over to her rug to eat it. Is it large for anybody else's yorkie? Will she get used to it? Her stool seems totally normal and she starts dancing as soon as she sees the bag, so we are happy.. just curious lol!

Mine just like to gather around my feet/chair, and eat....they will go get a mouthful of kibble, bring it to where I am sitting, drop it at my feet, or right by my recliner, or here by the desk where I work, and then eat each morsel piece by piece. As long as everyone is eating and not fighting, they can do it anyway they like!

lol ok. She truly seems to be loving it and it actually smells good?! I usually gag smelling the dog food!

Great!! If it aint broke, dont fix it!!! Now, just like all of us......she may have a day where she decides she is not hungry or as hungry one day....dont go switching and swapping everything around....you will really mess yourself up and get on that crazy merry-go-round of trying this, trying that, going to this, going to that.....they all have days where they just simply get tired of eating....stay the course....dont give her the idea that you enthusiastically are running a 5 star restaurant, and are excited to go thru thousands of different foods/menus, to cater/deliver to her excuisite palate, exactly what she desires, when she demands it. Remember who pack leader is!!! You have a baby that is doing very well on her food....she is enjoying it, it is good for her, she will do great on it....stick with it unless she would develop a medical intolerance to the food....remember, if that is all she eats, that is all she knows! She will be happy with what she gets.....these dogs dont sit around, resenting the fact that owners do not offer unlimited changes and choices to them....what they dont know, they can not possibly miss!
