Biting yorkie
 

We have a 14 week old puppy. His biting is so bad we can't even put a collar on him without him flipping out. These are not little nips, but he,s breaking the skin. Took him to the groomer for the first time yesterday and he bit her 3 times. She said not to bring him back until the problem is solved. We have tried several things and they are not working. He is a yorkie and we are about ready to take the loss and try to find a rescue center to take him.

I would first try the Bark Genie, and then also contact a trainer.

Yes, we just got back from the vet and she gave us some things to work on. Feeling better about it now. We have had him about 6 weeks.

I have a 2 yr old with no training at all and she likes to bite, but only when your hand is by her face. I just keep saying "no bite" very sternly. No yelling. That's very important. Don't yell.

I would contact a trainer about a personal session. I can not imagine a 14 week old puppy being vicious and this should be able to be trained out. My puppies bit me but in a teething kind of way and never broke skin. I also trained mine to not bite me. I wish you were closer because I would gladly take the dog for a week for you and see if I could work with it and get it to not bite.

You should be able to do a private lesson with a trainer, or even do a in board with some that will keep the dog for a week and work on this stuff several times a day. I would never want to send my dogs away for a week, but then I have done a lot of my own training with my dogs. They are not perfect, but they are good dogs. I have many years of owning dogs myself and I also took some classes on becoming a trainer, but the store I worked in shut down so my classes were discontinued as the store was paying for them.

Something you can try is to grab the puppies bottom jaw with your thumb in their mouth and this prevents them from closing their mouth. It is not my favorite thing to do with a puppy, but if they are biting they need to know that it is unacceptable behavior. My puppy is 11 months old and he loves to chew on my hand, but he never bites down at all, it is just mouthing it and your puppy should be taught this. I don't worry about him biting people because of this.

Good luck and please consider other options before you send him to a rescue. A lot of people on here would be willing to take a puppy that young and work with it. Have you talked to the breeder about this? They may be willing to take the puppy back and work at correcting the behavior? I know someone who had a poodle and when it was 15 months old it randomly attacked and bit someone. The breeder asked to have the puppy returned to them so they could observe it's behavior and contacted my friend and said they felt something wasn't right with the dog and they wanted to keep the dog for the rest of it's life as a pet and gave them pick of the litter of their next litter born and they got the most wonderful poodle who lived to be 19 years old. The breeder might want to know if there is a problem with this puppy.

As I said, if I was closer I would take the puppy for a week and work with it for you and try to get that behavior modified. I am sorry you are having problems. Even a pet smart would have a trainer you can talk to about this and maybe set up a private session with you just to work on this issue. As soon as this pup is old enough I would get it enrolled in an obedience class so it gets trained.
