On our way to a second yorkie....
 

So, after much research, we are officially on our way to getting our next yorkie in late May/early June from a trusted YT breeder. My questions, car seat and carriers that fit two? I have a snoozer console size small. Do I just buy the size large? Are there carriers that come with two harness clips instead of one? Do you crate them separately? Advice and opinions please. Thank you in advance!!

Congratulations! My 2 big boys share the large Pet Gear car seat. They also have a large Snoozer car seat. Look at the measurements and think about how they will fit in your car. I drive a smallish car and the Pet Gear makes it easier for me to get the 2 boys in and out of the car. The seat doesn't have the high sides/arms like the Snoozer. The Snoozer is plusher though and better for longer trips for us.

Some people prefer 2 separate small Snoozer seats, or the medium. You can buy an extra tether to go with the medium.

Carriers: I don't know of any with 2 tethers, but there is probably one out there.

I just wanted to say I have a suburban, but also four human children so I use the snoozer console...but it is the small size so I will need to get a different seat or different size. She likes to be close to me (big surprise right? lol) and so the console works great, but would love to hear from more people who have two pups and use just one seat? Thanks so much!! We are SO excited.

I am going to be getting a second one also, and have the same questions as you.
I think I will buy the large Snoozer seat for them.
You can buy a 2-way Coupler, that you can attach to the car seat, and then you can attach both harness to it.

yes-that is exactly what someone on amazon said too! So that's the plan. keep me posted on your baby boy :)

I just put a post up about a new study on car seats done by the Center for Pet Safety. I think it needs to go through approval before going up, but should be there soon. Please, please look at it before making a decision. Everyone has to do what they think is best for their Yorkies, but I want to make sure that the information is available.

I too went from having one Yorkie to having two and was not sure what to do. We had loved the Snoozer with a car harness for our previous beloved Yorkie, so get a Snoozer Lookout II in medium size for our two new babies. The seat came with one tether and we purchased a second one. We could not find a car harness that fit our Yorkies, so we attached the tethers to a mesh walking harness---note that Snoozer makes no specific suggestion as to what type of harness is used.

The whole experience was a disaster. One of the tethers broke pretty much right away (while I was adjusting it) and the seat kept leaning over to one side if they both were on said side---and together their weight is under the suggested amount for the seat. The kept getting the tethers caught and were strangling each other at times. Luckily the two times we tried to use it, I was in the back with them and prevented them from being injured.

I have landed on getting two Sleepypod Mobile Pet Beds. Not cheap, but I have the peace of mind that they are in the safest situation I can possibly have them in whilst driving.

Hi and congrats on getting a new baby! I drive a Tahoe and have the center console Snoozer with the two tethers, I have had it over a year, use it all the time and have had no problems at all. I occasionally will tighten the straps if they seem somewhat loose, but mine stays in my vehicle all the time, I don't take it out. Both of mine sit and lay comfortably in it, they are a little over 5lbs each. Hope this helps! :)

Forgot to mention, I use Buddy Belt harness from Maximo - W. Fields Dog Boutique -OMG the BEST harnesses I have ever had!

The Pet Ego bag seems like a more all-around bag---good for the plane, car, more subtle design, but the car system seems more complicated then Sleepypod. We went with Sleepypod because dogs can see out 360 degrees and my two really cannot stand to be separated. If it were safe for them, we would have them in one carrier, but it isn't, so the next best thing is them being able to see each other

How old is your first Yorkie? My answers will give you variables that you will not know until you bring your new puppy home. You do not know how well the 2 will get along.

I have 2 puppies that are 11 months old and are litter mates so they actually get along splendidly. My 10 year old Yorkie gets along great with them, but differently.

As far as crating, I do crate my puppies together and will continue to do so as long as they are not fighting with each other, at that point they will get separate crates. My older Yorkie has his own crate, but he is rarely crated as he is more trust worthy left loose in the house when I leave.

Riding in the car I usually have a pillow on the floor of the front seat where my older dog is content to lay and then the two puppies are tethered on the passenger seat and they are happy to be there and share the seat well. I have a doggie seat but none of mine like to ride in it and prefer to be on the seat ( I have tethers for them).

I would consider putting them both in the same seat IF they will get along that closely for car rides. I would watch for jealousy with the older Yorkie though at first and don't make them ride together if it upsets the one as it won't help them to learn to get along. Some Yorkies just adore their new sibling from day one. Some learn to love them (as my older Yorkie did after a couple weeks) and some never want to share space like that. It will all depend on your dogs.

Good luck with the new one! My older one acted like I broke his heart when I brought twin puppies home, but after a couple weeks he loved them.
