Would you foster a deployed soldier's dog for $500/month + reimbursed expenses? Exactly what the title asks. If a soldier was deploying for 1-2 years and posted on YorkieTalk asking if anyone wanted $500/mo to foster his dog (and he would reimburse all additional expenses such as food, medical, etc.), would anyone here take the soldier up on that offer? |
Imo, I'm sure many people would be willing to help out, and for much less...even for free to be honest. |
If the dog was a good fit in my home, I would definitely do it for someone deploying! I would do it for free. If financially able, I would cover medical costs too. |
I will.... I have 3 Yorkie and (for me) extra cash will be nice ( with twins daughters in College)...LOL |

If the dogs got along I would do it for free. I would also cover the med costs. It's the least I can do to give something back to a soldier who is putting his/her life on the line for this country. |
Fantastic- thanks everyone. Since I am considering going for a Morkie/a mutt (through a rescue), I posted this same question on the SpoiledMaltese forums, and was thrilled to see the positive responses I got....both here and there. I was asking this question for myself (I'd be the owner of the dog). You see, I am going to be on a military scholarship for the grad. program, and I will be joining the Navy as an officer after completing my grad program. I am of a mind to do a full 20 yrs of active duty service. Now, in most bases, dogs are permitted. The only problem areas are ships and deployments. Since I don't want to get a dog and then have to re-home it during a potential deployment, I posted this here since only dedicated owners make accounts here, and it's a fantastic community. I would still be careful in choosing who to place the dog with, of course, but as a single guy with relatives who hate dogs, I'd definitely be asking around on YT. I would absolutely offer the compensation listed above should the situation ever arise, and it was nice to see there is some interest here. Thanks for your responses, everyone! |
New puppy, how fun! Such an exciting time. I love that you are thinking things so thoroughly. Not everyone looks that far into the future when acquiring a furry friend. Good luck with everything. Please share pics of your new buddy once you get him. |

I would certainly jump on this chance to help out a wonderful member of our Navy!!...any of our services actually!!! Most of my family is Navy/Marines.....father was a Navy trained pilot in WWII....we are loyal to all our servicemen, but especially Navy!!! I would take the $500.00 and put that in a separate "doggie account"....that money would be used to feed the pup, as well as any medical attention needed....simply because I am living on a social security check and could not afford extra expenses...and at the end of deployment, when the pup was returned to you, money not used to feed the pup or medical care needed, would be returned to you....you are out keeping my butt safe here at home, that is just a very small debt I feel I would owe you for your service to this Nation. |

My son is in the Air Force And I once kept a cat for a deployed navy friend of his for 10 months. Cali and the cat got along OK - sort of ignore end each other (the cat was very old), but when the deployment was over and the cat went home Cali looked for that cat for months. When they were in the yard calimwould tryntomcefend the cat against anything she thought could be a problem and the cat did follow her around out there. |
