Barking and chasing cars! My little girl Minnie will be a year old in March. These past few weeks she has been acting completely different. She will constantly bark at the TV if it is on. We will be playing away but she will just stop to bark at the TV. At jight she will just sit and watch it when I do and continue to bark. Just recently she started barking and chasing cars when we go for walks. Is there anything I could try? |
Have you noticed if she barks when there's something specific on? Or perhaps a certain channel? (animal planet?) The only time Magnus barks at the tv is when he sees a big bird (like an eagle) coming towards the screen. You need to distract her when she starts barking. Same thing with the car chasing. Call for them, make them sit, and then give them a treat. Or if she likes squeaky toys, squeak the toy to get their attention. Give them a command before you reward so they won't think barking/chasing car would get them something "good". |
Thank you for the advice. I will have to start taking treats on our walks now! I've tried giving her toys even if we are playing with her she will just start barking away. She LOVE treats so I think that should help! She really doesn't bark at anything specific. |
Just make sure you make her work for her treat. If you just give it to her as a distraction, it'll make the situation worse b/c she'll think, bark = treats. For car chasing, stand in front of her to block her view. Get her to sit and after she calms down, give her the treat. It might take several days but she'll get it. :) Good luck! ps. I've heard some good things about clicker training as well. Try searching youtube. I'm sure you'll be able to find bunch of helpful videos. pps. I forgot to ask. What type of harness are you using? |
Thano you!! We havery gone to puppy training and have a ton of clickers she responds very well to the clicker. I forgot all about it, I will give that a try too. Thanks! |
I will go along with all those training sessions....but I would NEVER trust a "runner" to remain calm and follow directions when presented with an absolutely irrestible dashing squirrel or cat or another dog....or a CAR!!!!! I workjed with a young man that had bought him a puppy...he was training this puppy all the good manners and respect most people train their dog.....he told me he was working on not chasing cars...I told him just what I told you above....he laughed, scoffed, and sooooo confidently remarked how SMART and WELL BEHAVED and WELL TRAINED HIS dog was............ Two weeks later he buried his smart, well behaved, well trained dog, WHO DASHED INTO THE TRAFFIC AFTER A RABBIT.......The dog was in a "sit" command because of the traffic and the owner was concerned the dog was getting "antsy" to go after the rabbit.....owner was correct to be concerned. |
Our little Peanut is now 1-1/2 years old, but just before age 1 she became a terror. She barked at every little noise, was paranoid, and chased anything with wheels. We went through intense training to get her back into control. Frequent training and commands with treats throughout the day, using the gentle leader leash on walks, learning the 'leave it' command all helped. The moment just before she reacts to a car we need to get her attention with a loud "leave it" and get her to look at us as the car passes. Lots of praise and a treat right after. We also rang the door bell over & over, pulled out the vacuum a few times a day, etc - anything that would normally make her react - to desensitize her to her triggers. |
