teething & ears? Hi all! So, we've had Paisley for 5wks as of today. We got her at 8wks. At exactly 10wks her ears stood up on their own overnight. She'll be 14wks in 2 days. A couple days ago her left ear started drooping. It's totally down now. Today it seems her other ear is starting to fall. She's become more obsessed with chewing on her toys. She seems to be sleeping a little more and eating a little less (and slower). Is she at the age to start losing her baby teeth already?! Her stools are good/consistent. She drinks water. She plays but not as rough or as rough as she has been. I'm not complaining about that....She used to get a little crazy. We've never had a yorkie before and after losing our Maltese so unexpectedly last year...I'm pretty on guard with behavioral changes. She just started sleeping in our bed a couple nights ago. She's been doing well with housebreaking (pee pad training). After the first night when it took her a little while to realize the bed was for sleeping....She's been sleeping well in bed. Opinions? She goes back to the vet in one week for her final booster (then another week for her rabies). She's been gaining weight. Right now it seems she'll top out at 7lbs-ish full grown. |
Sounds like you need to shave the hair on her ears. You need to keep the weight off of the ears so they get strong. You want to shave at least the top 1/3 of the ears. Some Yorkie's ears never stand up. |
Thats about the age mine started teething. Pretty normal age so i wouldnt worry about that. Mine never started eating less tho so may want to keep an eye out and make sure she is still eating plenty. Ears often go down or droop when puppies are teething. They usually go back up no problem. In my experiences at least. My hairless chihuahua chinese crested mix... Her ears went straigt up and then when she strted teething one drooped and then went down all the way. Then the next ear did the same. I started to think they wouldnt go back but then one morning they were back up and have stayed up ever since. I worked at a clinic for many years and seen the same thing with other puppies ears and teething :) |
Ears go up and down and back up with teething....completely normal....you can shave the hair off the top 1/3 of the ear, but as soon as pup stops teething, those ears will come back up....shaving the hair from them will just "lighten the load"! |
I'd lighten the load on the ears, but if they don't pop up soon after that - I'd be sure and tape them ASAP or you will probably have long term trouble w/ the ears. There is a taping thread in the Puppy Library. |
