grandson has hives! My daughter's family just got a new baby Yorkie on Tuesday and now my grandson has hives. He is allergic to many things, but has not been bothered around my Yorkie...so, I thought Yorkies were hypoallergenic? Has anyone seen this, or know of this happening? Thanks. Trishke |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Your poor grandson! Yorkies are more hypoallergenic than most dogs because they do not have an undercoat and do not shed, although they will leave a little hair like a human. But, hair picks up dust and debris, various allergens, especially when close to the ground like on a Yorkie. Is your daughter's Yorkie exposed to more than your Yorkie perhaps? Could be anything like maybe a difference in outdoor environment? |
Has the baby brought in fleas? My dad and brother both break out in awful hives if we have fleas in the house |
Another thought: grooming products, shampoo, conditioner? |

This was my first thought! Especially since he is not bothered with any reaction when around your other yorkie..... |
They have some detective work ahead. Your input is very helpful, thank you. |
I bathed my new "kiddo" in a flea shampoo when I got him home. I then broke out in hives everywhere I had been cuddling him up too. I had to bathe him in human shampoo, and start on steroids for me to clear it up. Now, I use 4-legger shampoo for the little man. Both of us are much happier :) |
Thanks to all who responded to my mom's post - the hives are gone - we think our son did have a reaction to some tiny bites that he got on his leg - possibly flea bites but we don't think our baby yorkie has fleas so probably he got them elsewhere. Thank you very much for information about dander and detergents - this was very helpful for the future! |
