Yorkiemom1 | 01-15-2016 08:53 AM | I also free feed and recommend all my new owners free feed until at least 1 year old. I equate restriction of food on a puppy under 1 year of age, akin to putting a 2-3 year old human baby on a diet....nothing I would even consider. (Hypoglycemia has never been an issue with any of my puppies....it just is not in my breeding....not ALL yorkies experience this, so free feeding is to meet the requirements for nutritional intake to assure healthy development of all the cells in that growing baby!) Until at least 8 months old, that puppy needs all the nutrition he can get because that is the building blocks for his future...if the food being fed is not a quality puppy food, or if the baby is not getting enough of the required daily nutrients/calories, growth of every cell in that baby's body is adversely affected, and I want my dogs to be the best they can possibly be, according to the blueprint/genetic makeup that went into "building" that baby! At a year old, that baby is as good as it gets......rather than ME trying to determine what I think that should be, I let the genetic makeup of that baby determine that! AFTER the dogs own genetic programing has been developed to maximum, at 8 - 12 months of age, then I start determining/tinkering/meddling around with that youngsters physique!
Also, my babies are still with their mommas at 12-14 weeks of age....they get nursing time for emotional stability and growth. |
