Keeping your babies was in winter Hi guys. It's getting really cold here.. (maybe around 30s) but my puppies love being outside. My smallest baby (3lbs) would shiver as soon as she gets out.. and other (4lbs), would shiver and run at the same time and never wants to get back in, no matter how cold it is. I have some sweaters for them but it's not that thick.. it's really hard to find clothing for them when they are so tiny! They wear xxxs or xxs.. I've looked online but I can't seem to find anything in their size.. Smallest baby gets cold easier since her half of the body is shaven down due to lp surgery on both legs.. What do you guys do to keep your puppies warm? Do I need to pick up a sewing machine and attempt to make their own clothes? Lol Last time I made a round duffle bag.. it became a square :/ |

Deviruchi, I'm a little more south than you, but it has been in the high 20s here the last couple of nights. Zeusy loves his Thundershirt, and i found him a Thundersweater (it has the shirt and the sweater snaps over it). It keeps him very warm. He wears an XXS. I still cuddle and wrap him in his blanket when we come inside. Oddly, he has a left hind quarter shaved due to Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease surgery. We may have to have the LP surgery on both knees. How is your baby recovering? |
This is my first winter with chewie, he is 2 pounds and also wears xxs. I've found sweaters at petsmart, pet supplies plus, pcdogclothing.com (they have xxxs). This winter has been mild here but he's been out in 11 degrees. I really don't like it but I layer him up with his pajamas, a sweater, and a coat, and only long enough for him to potty. I hope you find some nice clothes for your little ones!! |
I have made little all in ones from fleece material, it's great for keeping the snow of their hair and nice a warm and comfy for them. |
there are tons of warm stuff for dogs every where and if your pup is hard to fit, try ETSY or some of the sewers listed on here. But I think the biggest challenge in keeping them warm if there is snow, ice or rain is through their feet and belly. Most clothing does not cover their belly or their feet. There are shoes for dogs but most dogs have trouble walking in them. I tried Lola in a pair but she walked so poorly I was afraid she was going to twist a leg while trying to learn. Lola tolerates the cold real well, but once we get snow here we stop walking because even in the heaviest coat her feet and underbody get wet and cold. Unless it is single digits she goes out to potty naked because it does not bother her and she comes back inside in around 3 min or less. |

Also you can cut a men's sock to wear as an undergarment to make warmer your existing clothes! Good luck:)) |
They have many very warm coats at ALIEXPRESS.COM and very inexpensive. Take a look. It comes direly from China, the reason everything is so cheap, and most things are free delivery. I have ordered a dozen things and like everything. |
Dexter's a big boy and this is his second winter, he's coping MUCH better this year and tolerates the cold really well. I dress him in flannel pj's and put a parka over top, so he's as covered as possible. We have over a foot of snow now and he loves romping through it. He's good to about -15 c (5 f) but colder than that and he's too cold, but like I said, Dex is a bigger boy, close to 11 lbs. My point though is pj's as an under layer, plus a parka that velcros around the belly and neck are a good combo :) |
Many of the Dallas Dog brand sweaters come in sizes that will fit a 3 pound dog. The 6" back length size is really small. |

My little fur baby is always cold... so I put her on sweaters and she loves it... there's alot of wear out there for dogs just depends on material, etc. good luck! |
thank you guys for the tips and recommendation! @txvicki, thank you! they have some cute clothes i like. :) @zeus is loved, i've been looking for some thundershirt for my girl, since she gets scared easily, but whatever i find its too big on her.. :/ as for her knees, they are healing fine :) had last appointment with the doc and he said all is good to go, and that she can resume her regular training/playing/running. she seems to be pain free and i dont see her limp or lifting her legs anymore. the "legg-calve-perthes disease", is that related to lp? i hope your baby's surgery will go smoothly. i was so scared and felt so bad for her that she had to deal with such pain :/ @ababy42693, i've went to local pet stores near me, but for whatever reason, they are normally out on xxs lol; (maybe alot of ppl near me have small tiny babies hidden away...) but ty! i hope i can find some too. its only getting colder here :/ @julieafies mum, is it easy to make clothes? do you know where i can find a template or something so i can cut out the fleece material easily? lol @dblain, so.. i should focus mainly on their belly and feet more than their whole body? my babies stay indoor to potty mostly (in potty pad)... they do potty when they do go out, so i normally worry about them being cold on their regular walks, which can be about 15-30 min long. @misspixi i actually went by target to buy some long socks for nami, and it fits her fine.. but it seemed so choppy and ugly... my scissor was so dull everything looked so choppy lol but you make your pups wear that and another clothing on top of the socks? i never thought of layering them... lol thanks! @sharonsnowbird, i heard of the website, but i never actually bought anything of it. i guess i'll take a look. thanks :) @madra i can't wait for it to snow here.. (if it ever does) i wanna see how they handle/play with it :) thanks for the layering tip too! @maximo, thank you! will search them up :) @capt noonie, how do i find out my puppy's shoe size exactly? she has tiny paws, but when i tried s and xs at petsmart, her foot woudlnt even go in... not sure if i was doing it right. lol @1014hernandez, i have couple of sweaters now, but they werent thick enough for them. i'm thinking of stopping by hobby lobby or something and attempt to make them my own clothes... do you think if i put silk like material where their bodies touch, will prevent them from matting so much? |
Regarding the boots, I would PM Alldogboots. She is a member here and has everything dog boots, shoes, sandals, etc. She'd be the best person to ask. |

Bitter Cold We live in MN and right now it's 3 degrees. This weekend the highs will be -5 to -11 degrees with lows to -20. Worried about our 5 month old Cooper. I don't have boots for him. Hope he goes pee and poop fast! |
As for making the all in one fleece suit I bought a pattern and it was really easy to understand and once I made one it got even easier. |
I order alot of clothes for my Yorkies and chihuahua thru Amazon. I have found do many cute and reasonable clothes for them there. |
