My little genius has picked up another command My little one is learning not to cross the street without my command. I started teaching her this after she took off across the street to get to another dog. She pulled the leash right out of my hand. What I started doing is before I want to cross a street I tell her to stop. I do this even when we are in my driveway. When we are ready to cross, I slap my knee twice and say let's go. I started doing this just on a whim but it is actually working. When we walk our normal walks along our normal routes, she stops on her own without me giving her the command to stop whenever we reach the corner or if we are standing at the curb waiting to cross. I love it because she will not cross the street unless I give her the command. Pretty cool right? Sometimes I forget that we are about to cross the street and she will just come to a dead stop. I think something is wrong and then I remember, she is not allowed to cross the street unless I give her the command. I'm not sure if this will ever save her life but it's kinda of cool that she is learning when to cross the streets (in my neighborhood at least since that is where we do all of our walking). I am actually also training her from reacting to seeing other dogs so that she doesn't try to take off after them in the first place. Keep in mind she is always on leash when we are outside but on two separate occassion she pulled the leash out of my hand. Of course now I hold to it that much harder. |
that's awesome! Uni doesn't really know when sidewalks end and streets begin. It's pretty annoying. Actually I think she does know, she just doesn't care. I tried the "sit" at the corner before we proceed and she will sit, but will bark at the top of her lungs, like "I'M SITTING! LET'S GO! LET'S GO!" At least she does listen to stay. |
We use this at all household doorways. That way I do not have to worry about Mario "getting/sneaking out" without being seen, Mario tripping kiddo or someone stepping on Mario in a doorway ie carrying packages etc... He is trained to wait for a release command, and stay regardless of what else I (or anyone holding the door) say until I say the release command. Curbs have to be different for us since Mario has to learn intelligent disobedience as a service dog for my kiddo. Keep up the training, and you will always have a happy, well-trained, eager learner who is a sweetie :). |
Wow! That is truly impressive and indeed a wonderful skill; she is obviously one bright little gal and you're doing a great job of training! Just an idea...I made Piper a leash and for the hand loop I glued about 2" wide elastic to the inside and measured it to fit snuggly over my hand. Of course I still hold onto leash, but should I lose grip, the loop of the leash remains secure around my wrist; in fact, I sort of have to wiggle my hand to slide loop off, but it's quite comfortable. Anyway, just a thought (having dropped leash in a parking lot and barely stepping on it in time)... |

Resourceful has become my middle name since having a special needs kiddo. We home school as well, and every day we learn is a new adventure around here since every day she learns in a different way. |
Isn't that wonderful about having those new adventures?! I reckon it can sometimes be a toss-up as to who is doing the teaching, yes?! I envy your energy, Mayzoo, cuz lord knows, you've got to have plenty of it!! |
