considering a second yorkie, looking for input SO we absolutely adore our little gal. At some point, we would like to get a second pup. My only worry is -has anyone done that and had their pup not like it?? She was easy to train in every aspect (except tooth brushing lol)and is a complete joy... but there are six of us giving her so much attention. I think she kind of loves being the center of attention? lol. How do you find the right fit for adding a second yorkie? Looking for all input N stories, good and bad because I want to make sure we are being realistic? Thanks! |
It's extremely rare that a dog won't adjust to a new addition. We got Marcel when Wylie was 2 and he adjusted over about a month...during that time he was extra needy, feeling insecure, needed TLC...and that was okay, we gave him what he needed and he then adjusted. |
Honestly the best thing I ever did. I've heard and read if you have a female don't get another but you can add a male. I thought it would be so much work but it's not. They provide me hours of endless entertainment. We now moved in with my best friend who has a dog and fostering a 4th. I must have lost my mind. |
Ziva was a spoiled princess for 2 years (even tho we did have a bigger older dog) when we got Abby. I was careful to pick the sweetest, easiest going pup from a litter of 4 girls (not even the best looking:eek:). Ziva was put out and never very friendly to Abby, even though Abby wanted to play-Ziva didn't seem to know how. I taught them to walk together on a lead and they keep a close eye on each other but after 5 years I would not call them friends:( |
I have 3 and I love it. I think they keep each other active and healthy. |
We just got a second yorkie a week ago. Chloe is almost 3 and has been the center of the universe since she joined our family. This time I decided to get a male. Carson is 12 weeks old and only 2.2 pounds now, where Chloe is a tall, 11 pound princess! For the first 24 hours, you would have thought we brought a snake into the house! Chloe was terrified! She eventually sniffed and realized he was ok. However, we have power struggles but for a little guy, Carson can hold his own! We have done our best to not disrupt Chloe's routine and have probably even overcompensated with attention, she's never wanted for any in the past! I have toys all over and there are times when they both must have the same one. I have to calm them down from playing too rough, as the size difference makes me nervous. Chloe gets very concerned when Carson is in his exercise pen for potty time (which is going well) as if she feels sorry for him! I am hoping they become good for each other as I can see them become more friendly each day. I do have some guilt for any attention I take away from Chloe, but am enjoying our new two dog home. |
My first Yorkie had an only child type personality, but he got along with dogs we met on our walks. We brought home his brother and they get along great, which is amazing because they are both very strong males. We had a few jealousy issues during the first couple months, but they were pretty easily resolved. |
My breeder told me to take a male. I have three females. Of course, the smallest one 5 lb thinks she is the Alpha. She will try to bully the other two ones , which proceed into a down out all dog fight. It only occurs when they both want to sit the chair with me at the same time. They go at it like two Pitt bulls. I break them up and put the little one on her back and hold her at the neck like Caesar Milan showed. They play and chase each the rest of the time. I would go with a male puppy if I had it to do over. |
I would strongly advise against holding a tiny yorkie by the neck. Even on Cesar's show it says not to attempt anything he does and that he is a professional. Not everyone agrees with Cesar's methods but using them untrained can be very dangerous. |
At one time I had a pack of 3 girls. all 3 years apart, the first 2 were not spayed, the 3rd was, they all got along great. Of course the last one , the smallest one was the bossy one. There was NEVER a fight, never a growl between them. Their food dishes were all lined up, they ate side by side, never a prob. they all had their own place to sit next to me, if one sat where she was not supposed to she would get a staring glare from the other one and would move to her spot lol. They were excellent girls. They were all well socialized with all dogs. When I had just the one girl, she was 3 when I bought home her new sister, it did take about 3 weeks before the older finely got off the sofa for a full body sniff,it took the older one about 5 weeks to interact with the baby. Now I had 2 older ones, 6 and 3 when I bought home the 3rd one. Same reaction from now 2 older girls. Puppies have a diff. scent do not smell like a DOG lol, now I had 2 girls on the sofa petrified of this furry bouncy ball of energy, with teeth like a shark. Again it took several weeks for the 2 older ones to finely come off high grounds for a full body sniff of this new comer. I think it all depends on the dog you have. If she is well socialized with other dogs, it may take a few weeks for your older one to fully accept a new one. I never had a prob. with all girls. The 2 that were not spayed, when they came into season their personalities did not change, they did not becomes aggressive towards each other. Always show the older one more attention, make her FIRST for everything. When you go out and return home, great the older one FIRST, feeding time, put the older ones food dish down FIRST, treat time the older ones gets hers FIRST. If the pup you have now is well socialized with other dogs, she should have no prob. in accepting a new sister or brother. But, it will take her time, perhaps several weeks to accept, not be afraid of this bouncing ball of energy, and to interact with the new kid. Let your older one make the first move,do not try to FORCE a friendship. Your older one will know when the time is right and safe to interact with the new one. Good luck. |
I had 3 yorkies and a Chihuahua, until a few months ago. Our oldest yorkie JJ , who was 13 passed away. Minnie is about almost 2, since she was a year old she was aggressive with JJ, we had to keep them apart. She attacked him once and JJ needed 8 stitches. We thought maybe Minnie needed company so we got a girl yorkie for her. At first everything was fine, but after JJ passed away she decided she hated the little girl Abbey. If Abbey is removed from the picture she starts on the Chihuahua. We can't put them together at all. I would never have two girl Yorkies in the same house again. By herself Minnie is a doll, she is sweet and loving. We made the decision to find Minnie a new home because we would have to rehome the other 2. Minnie has to be by herself. It breaks my heart. I truly love her but I know she is going to a wonderful loving home where she can be the top and only dog. If I knew what I knew now I would never have gotten another yorkie, and would have kept trying to keep the Chihuahua and yorkie apart. We found a loving home for Minnie just a short distance from our home, so we can go see her and we know she will be loved. |
Adding a second Yorkie was the best thing I ever did. Make sure not to expect love at first sight though- it took about 6 months for my two to really get used to each other. If you are thinking about adopting often yorkies are in foster homes so you know about their personality and it can help you make a great match. Good luck! |
You have to consider the fact that if you get a female there is always that chance that they will fight. Typically fight will break out between same sex dogs. I found this out the hard way. I already had a females and a male than kept a female from one of their litters and we never ever had an issue. That was until we decided to add another female to our family/pack. Well she tried to gain the pack leader roll at a very early age which progressively got worse. I tried like hell to convince her that I was the pack leader but she continued to lash out at the other two girls. Plus with adding another pup you may have issues with jealousy but that can be dealt with if it becomes a problem. Just remember to treat them both equally. Spoil them both the same . . :D |
ok this is all great input. thank you. I am thinking it might be safest to find a docile male? |
Peanut was 18 months old when we got Bizzie (6 months old). They are the best of buddies. My DH aways says Bizzie is the best toy we ever got for Peanut. Peanut is neutered and Bizzie will be spayed . I also have a senior Schnauzer girl that tolerates the Yorkies. She was very unsure of them at first (she was the only Diva for many years) but she is very good natured and gets along fine with them. Bizzie likes to get in Diva's face and lick her so I have to rescue Diva from that but We love having all our furbabies. |
