Crate training advice wanted We brought our Yorkie puppy, 13 weeks old, home yesterday. I bought a carrier to use as her crate. For night sleeping and when we are away. I put her in it for bed and she immediately began whining and scratching to get out. Now I can ignore the whining but my fear was is that she would somehow hurt herself scratching to get out. Can anyone comment on what your experience with this has been and put my fears to rest please? |
Hi - welcome to YT and CONGRATS :) on your new puppy! Personally, I don't believe in crate training if the dog actually hates it - it's way too confining and unnatural in my opinion. Instead, we bought the Iris pen (walmart or amazon) and used that for ours when they were puppies. And btw, yes, there have been pups who've hurt themsleves trying to get out of confinement. |
Welcome to the group! I agree with Ann, an Iris pen is a way more comfortable place for a pup to be enclosed in. I would never leave my puppy in a crate either. With the Iris pen, you can have a bed in there, and a pee pad or UGO potty. And a water bowl of course. I bought a couple of whelping pads from amazing that cover the entire floor of the iris pen. When one gets dirty, replace it with the clean one. Then your pup can relieve itself on the pee pad whenever it needs to, or get water whenever it is thirsty. Have fun with your new pup! |
