Yorkie grooming newbie Hi there! As I am looking through these threads I see so many different looking yorkies. I love them!!! I rescued my baby and I was not looking for a yorkie just fell in love when I saw her ... She doesn't seem to have that silky long hair that I see most of the pictures, it is soft and curls a little at the ends, when we take her to the groomer I never really know what to tell them we just have kept it shorter is this the wrong way to groom a yorkie? I'm excited to learn a lot more from experienced yorkie owners on here especially with grooming because I'm not really sure about the best practices TIA for your advice |
Hi and welcome to YT :)! It's totally up to you whether or not you want your pup to stay in a puppy cut, or, grow out to a full coat. The groomer can go whichever route you prefer. You can also groom them yourself, which is what I do as I believe it's much safer for the doggie. |
It sounds like the same kind of hair Bubba has. When he is in need of a cut, it curls and sticks out all over. I try to keep him in a westie or schnauzer like cut but right now it's getting colder so he looks like a puff ball at times. I cut them both myself because I feel much safer that way. I guess I read too much! I use clippers on him and yes I've made mistakes but hey it's hair and grows back. Sissy on the other hand has silky straight hair so I keep her longer and just trim her with scissors. |
There's really no right or wrong when it comes to style. :) I also prefer to keep my two in short cuts. Personally find it more appealing and it's so much easier to manage. If you ever think about grooming yourself, there are MANY tutorials you can learn from. With so many horror stories that appears, many of the members on YT (including myself) have taken the route of doing it at home. |
I have the most wonderful groomers (yep, two) anyone could hope for...Besides Piper's well-being, it's of utmost importance to me that groomer listens to my requests and both Carolyn and Tammy do just that; they'll even ask me specifics as to how much to trim, etc. I trust these talented women, which is paramount. Make sure to get opinions about prospective groomer from other clients. And take time to know person who will groom your baby. Any and all questions you have are valid and should be respected, regarded and answered in order to ensure you feel comfortable with their skills--and that your girl is safe (trust your instincts here). You needn't have a specific look/name to give your groomer--just describe what you think you want...As to your little one, any look that you like is the exact, perfect 'style'! |
Really its your call and preference how youd like them groomed, there really is not a wrong type of cut or style. I keep Mine in a puppy cut year round because its harder to keep them tangle free and clean with a long coat. (the rain here all the time doesn't help). I would just make sure to tell the groomer what you don't want. |
Sometimes it is kind of hard to explain the "look" you want to a groomer, so I would suggest printing off a pic of a puppy that you like the cut on, and take that with you and show the groomer. Much easier to follow a pic than a verbal description. |
I like the puppy cuts they are jusy so easy to maintain. I used to keep Jewels long but it seemed too much for what it was worth |
I just got my Yorkie girl last night and she was in desperate need of some type of trim. So I just basically cut alittle on her legs and especially her paws since she uses a pee pad. Easier to wipe them off. I trimmed her back end which was a little difficult because I couldn't find her tail! Sooo much hair! But I got it done. It's not perfect but it'll do. Hahaha |
