Dew Claw Removal

Bizzie still has her dew claws. I know they should have been removed when her tail was docked at 3 days but they weren't. She will be going in after the first of the year to be spayed and have any remaining baby teeth removed. She has double canines now. She will be 9 months old Christmas day. Do I need to have her dew claws removed? I really hate to cause her any more discomfort if it isn't neccesary.

If it were me I would just leave them. I have had yorkies in the past with front dew claws and they never caused any problems. Just make sure you keep them trimmed.

I had Barney's removed when he was neutered. I think he was around 7 months. If I had it to do again, I probably wouldn't. I was worried he would get them caught in something and have one rip off. They were very flimsy.

It was a major recovery. Had to keep his little paws wrapped and clean for a while. I can't really remember, but it seems like it was a week or two. Be prepared to see this and feel guilty.

I'm going to feel guilty enough about the spay and teeth.

Make sure you keep the trimmed when you have the other nails groomed. I recently neglected my poor boys nails and one had grown into the paw pad a little. The vet clipped it and it wasn't a problem but she did comment on how often she gets the same issue with neglected dew claws. I gues Bc they are higher and they may not get checked if the hair is long and covering them. Otherwise I do t think it's an issue. If it's kept nicely trimmed and short, I wouldn't think it would catch on anything.

No, leave them alone at this point. My girl also has her dew claws and I'd asked my vet what to do when she was a pup and she said to definitely not remove them -- it's too major and not really needed anyway.

My breeder docked Katie's tail, but is now even showing some of her Yorkies with undocked tails. She purposely left the dewclaws. She does competitive performance sports with her dogs, and there is evidence that dew class help give stability to dogs when running. I haven't had any problem with them on Katie.
