constipation my 9 year old male yorkie has developed what i assume is digestive and bowel problems, took to vet,has hi white blood cell count and bad neutrophils, 102 fever. he is on antibiotics now. he will not eat the food prescribed by the vet, which is royal canin lo fat gastro intestinal canned food. he was getting weaker so i cut up some boiled chicken and broth, he gobbled it up and seemed to feel better. today he's not feeling well, seems to be constipated, tried to poop and got all over his hiney(sp?). i cleaned him up, poop was dark and slimy. he has to eat something, i dont know what to do, but know i have to keep him hydrated. is it okay to keep letting him have chicken and broth? we,ll go back to vet tomorrow for fluids, but need suggestions for long term diet, please |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Sorry to to hear your boy is sick. Chicken typically makes for smaller, firmer, and less frequent poop. Dehydration will add to that. Likely that he is not constipated. Slime -- is it clear? This can be a sign of inflammation in the digestive track. Dark color can sometimes be blood. Did the vet give you a diagnosis? Does you boy have a history of gastro problems, pancreatitis? Long term diet will depend on those things. Plain chicken and broth are fine for short term. |
digestive issues ive only had him for 13 months, got him from a rescue, never had this problem before. slime is more orange/yellow. Friday's blood work showed all organs functioning normally, vet said he had an infection and bring him back in a week. it's obvious he is not feeling well so im trying to find something he,ll eat. planning a trip to petsmart soon so if you have any suggestions, wed appreciate it, thanks for your time:) |
slime is more orange/yellow. he is a rescue, ive had him for 14 months, so no real history. vet said he had an infection and to bring him back in a week |
If it were me, I think I'd be feeding boiled chicken with either white rice or white potato....for about a week or until he stabilizes and starts to seem more himself. You def need him to eat right now if he has an infection. I would not go shopping for a new food at this point as this could really screw up his GI further, ya know what I mean? I SO hope he feels better soon! Please keep us posted :)! |
thank you,i,ll add some rice to the chicken, got to keep him eating |
my lil boy seems to be enjoying the rice with his chicken, we went for a short walk, had a nice slimy orange poop and is now watching the panthers saints game. thank you forvthe support |
