Major breakthrough.....hopefully Duchess and I drove 12 hours to Nashville from Delaware to visit family for the holiday. The first 6 hours of the trip was a total disaster. Duchess never liked riding in cars but she would tolerate it to a point. Occasionally she would get car sick and throw up. In preparation for this trip to help alleviate some of her anxiety, I bought the thundershirt and I gave her some benadryl before we left. Neither one worked. The first 2 hours were fine and she slept peacefully. Then all hell broke loose. She started pacing and whining which I ignored......big mistake because the next thing I hear is farting and squirting....ewwwwww. My baby had diarrhea. So I pull the car over and spend 20 minutes or so cleaning the car out. Within an hour, it happened again and one more time before we got to Nashville for a total of three times that I had to clean the car out. Whenever she started whining a pacing, I knew she had to go. The good news is that on the way back home, riding in the car did not bother her. In fact, she was the perfect road dog, sleeping soundly and even chewing on her bully stick. She did this for the whole 12 hours. I am so proud of her. As I said earlier, Duchess never really liked riding in cars and would actually hide from me if she thought we were going in the car but this is the first time of I have seen her so at ease in the car. Keeping my fingers crossed that she has gotten over her anxiety about riding in cars. |
The things we do for our furbabies! |
Omg, you poor things - what a disaster on that first leg, I would've just died too....hearing that diarrhea going on ! That'd be awful. So glad the return home went so great though! Makes one wonder what was going on w/ her tummy on that first day...like did she eat something, or get a virus/tummy bug...or was it nerves...? You could also try (instead of Benadryl) acepromazine from the vet...it's a tranquilizer used for animals when traveling and may work better for you. Might be worth a try? Or calming sprays (aromatherapy) or pheromone sprays? A warming pad? |

On a side note, by cousin who I stayed with has 3 dogs and a fenced in one acre yard. For Duchess, it was like being in the dog park. She loved it. |
So glad the trip home was better. Both of mine use to get car sick until I got a car seat I was so sure that they would still get sick that I took the fuzzy cover off the car seAt and covered the foam part with a large plastic garbage bag. They haven't been car sick since! Even now I still carry wipes, paper towels, garbage bags and dry shampoo just in case :D |
I would take her for a ride in the car every day for the next week to keep her acclimated to it, and then every so often after that......at least now, you know the warning signs....she's pacing, it's time for a break |
also try ginger for car sickness. Ginger ale, gingersnaps, ginger whatever, about half an hour before and it actually helps. Worked with Toby. |
poor baby, hope its better next time |
