Garlic
 
My dad just gave Ted meatloaf. I'm praying that his piece didn't have any garlic cloves. What should I watch for as in symptoms?

Not only garlic, but possibly onion not to mention the fat, and most people use ketchup and that also has garlic, onion, and sometimes raisins too. Watch for diarrhea and vomiting. Scold your dad and if teddy gets sick, dad foots the bill!

Ted is a pretty tough boy always getting into stuff at grandmas but I'll be watching close!

What other everyday household foods, spices to we need to on the alert for...? Is garlic salt/powder (i.e. garlic bread) bad? I'm not familiar with problem "foods" ingredients, etc. Thank you for helping me to keep Piper safe!

I just know garlic, onions, chocolate, and raisins! I remember a clove was dropped and teddy wouldn't touch it I later learned they are bad no wonder he wouldn't touch it forever ago

Grapes and be very careful of sugar alcohol, xylitol. It is deadly to dog in even very small amounts.

Yes to the above listed, and the "cousins" of garlic, onions: shallots, chives

Also be careful of giving meat or veggies from a soup or stew that was cooked with onions/garlic. As well as processed meats (hot dog, cold cuts, etc), and high fat meats (steak, chicken skin, etc)

macadamia nuts and now some peanut butter has started using an ingredient thats bad too...and while both are bad, the darker the chocolate the worse it is for them

Still no signs he's been playing all night and this morning! He was a little gassy after eating but now he's a happy babe again no stinkies! It was a small piece of leftover so I hope it didn't have enough to hurt him

Most likely it was not enough to harm him. He is not a tiny Yorkie, right? I am sure a little piece did nothing bad to him. I don't feed my Yorkies scraps, but if something falls on the floor and they snatch it up I don't worry too much as it is such a small amount they got normally. I have good sized Yorkies. Teek is my smallest and he has an iron stomach. He is the most likely to get a hold of food scraps as he will steal food off plates and out of people's hands. The puppies are bigger than him and I don't give them any scraps, but I also don't panic if they gobble up a tiny bit of something dropped as most things are not that poisonous in a tiny amount.

Zylitol (the sweetener in most gums) though is very deadly to dogs. 1 piece of gum can kill a labrador. I can only imagine what it would do to one of my yorkies. I don't believe any other product in our house has that as I am allergic to artificial sweeteners so I don't buy products with sugar substitutes. The kids have gum sometimes though so they have been instructed on how bad it can be for the dogs.

I am glad he didn't show any signs of being sick!

I agree with you I don't give my dogs any table scraps. I have other family members look at me like I am insane. Their philosophy is I am willing to give my dog anything that I am going to eat. They will feed their dog any left overs from their dinner. When I mentioned to them garlic is bad for dogs they said I have been feeding my dog onions and garlic in their food for 30+ years and nothing has happened.


I would rather not chance it with my dogs and like you choose not to feed them anything but their regular food.

Wow, thank you very much for providing this great information. Piper ain't gonna be happy, as she wants to try everything I eat, but upon hearing what she shouldn't have, I'm not going to risk giving her something that could cause her harm. I appreciate you all enlightening me--as always, you have furthered my education!

Yea my babe currently weighs in at 15 lbs so I don't think it'll hurt him he too has an iron stomach! And I'm glad we learn from this site there's so much I didn't know about foods I just remember seeing garlic and onions are bad and of course the common told grapes and chocolate! Thanks guys :)

Ooh pork is a big no no my baby was awful after nomming on some ham so these people here helped me identify it was the pork fats
