How long does it take for yorkie puppies to learn how to go toilet outside? Hello, just wondering how long did it take your puppies to learn how to go toilet? I got Candy when she was 7 weeks old, she is 11 weeks old now, and I chose crate training since the day I got her. The thing is, she cried when she wants toilet only when she is in a crate, then I let her out to the garden, and praise her is she does something, but when I let her play and run around, she pees and poos on the floor, she won't ask and won't go to gardens door. I don't know if she is still to young , or she had to learn in 5 weeks time? What experience did u have with your puppies? Thanks :) |
This is a *very* young puppy, and it actually should've still been w/ its Momma until 12 weeks old...during which time more learning and socialization takes place via Momma and littermates. It will still take time for this young little being to absorb the learning. :) |
Yes, the puppy will not really be able to understand for quite a while. in the meantime, I suggest that you keep her in the kitchen or some other uncarpeted room during the dayuntil she is older and trained. |
How long it takes depends a little on the pup, and a huge amount on the owner, their consistency and their approach. Patience, consistency, patience, consistency, and more patience are your best resources. Next to those two, treats and praise are your best motivators to sucessful potty training. My girl was 8 weeks when I got her, also a bit young but I had older dogs to help in her socializing and I took extra steps for her to adapt. Granted she did beautifully when she was young, going on the pad and all, doing good on everything else. But once she got older it got a bit trickier/harder. I'd say she's started to go outside well enough at around a year old, with taking her out regularly. In fact, she gets irate or throws a tantrum when she doesn't get taken outside with the older dog(s). It really depends on the pup of course, I've just lucked out very well. The best thing is to try and make a consistent routine. |
What everyone said. Pretty much, it can take anywhere from couple weeks to couple years. (In some cases, longer) Patience and consistency is the key. |
I got my Scottie when he was 5 months, crated him since the first day I got him, and went through months of him crying through the night (anywhere from 2am to 5am like a human baby) because he hated the crate. I chose to continue crate training him because I read that you just have to be strong and get past that hump. I trusted the words of many who were successful with crate training. And so, by the time he was a little over 1 year old, he was fully house trained, pees and poos outdoors only, and even loves his crate (will crawl into his crate himself to sleep with the crate door left open). I stuffed an old down pillow in his crate so it's VERY comfy. But, this took a LOT of patience, months of sleepless nights, and positive reinforcement training with the crate. |
Every puppy is different. I got my 2 puppies at 10 weeks old (litter mates) and the first few weeks they just peed/pooped wherever. It was about 16 weeks that they really started making great progress on potty training. Take them outside at the same time everyday. Consistency is the key. By about 6 months the accidents were less. They are almost 9 months old and they have very few accidents in the house. Mine are pee pad and outdoor trained. If they pee/poop on the pad they are praised a lot. They go out at certain times of the day and usually go during those times and are praised heavily. I maybe have 1-2 accidents on the floor a week between the 2 puppies at this point. I never say anything to them about the accidents and just clean it up and then praise when they use the pad. Give it time, patience and consistency and your puppy will be there too. Some are trained by 4 months, some by a year and some it can take years. I hope yours is a 4 monther though :) |
